So far, I've tried Enemy Territory and Urban Terror, love them both but the graphics is kind of terrible by today's standards. Are there any current free games that are worth checking out? I'm talking about full blown retail quality games, not flash based ones.

Looking for any genre btw, mainly FPS/MMOs/RTS though.

Free + retail quality... they generally don't mix. The closest you could probably get is a game that has micro transactions (such as Savage 2, where you pay a small fee to upgrade to a premium account, or Saga where you buy booster packs with different units... Saga's pretty good by the way, persistent MMORTS)

Plus... does it matter if the graphics aren't up to Crysis-level if the game's actually good? Young'uns these days always expecting photo-realism... back in my day we had to walk 14 miles uphill in the snow to get to see rich kids playing pong in arcades with a whole 2 colours! When Pacman came in, it was like christmas... so colourful!

I love that game. What a great example of how far free games have come along.

I tried Savage 2 too but there weren't that many people playing when I signed on :(
It looks really nice though.

Anyways, I stumbled upon this website with a pretty good compilation of free games: http://www.freewaregames.net/

Oolite, Free game based on the 80's elite games but modernised and VERY expandable.

The standard ship pack is based on the 80's games so not "all that" but theres plenty of mods for the game that bring the graphics roughly up to date. I would recommend the system redux and "neolite" range if you arent a big fan of the original game.

Theres tons of content, lots of add-on missions etc available and theres even tutorials on how to make your own ships etc using all free tools...

+1 for Trackmania. Stick in it 3d mode and try not to puke when playing ;)

Strangeis the mixture of good graphics and free games... so far I've only seen "almost decent" graphics for relatively no charge, and the most are MMORPG's.

They look like PS2 games and have a rather good playability.

Oolite is free and mods bring the graphics up to fairly decent. Not perhaps quite on a par with x3, but for a free game very good. The game play is legendary, you can play completely true to the 80's original (including wire frame graphics option) or you can choose any number of add-ons, style changes, missions etc that you want. You can also make your own, or take other peopls apart and make them suit your own tastes - no more difficult than editing a config file.

These are screenshots I found online, I have to say in game at high rez it looks better.

This one shows the game in "standard" form, its a nice view of space, but thats also shows the unmodified "standard" ships (thats a cobra mk3)
