(From yesterday) When I plug the comp. in power line, it automatically turns on, and halts after 2/3 seconds. Then I have to start it as usual, then everything works fine like before. What's the problem?

Mobo: MSI K7N420 Pro
PSU: 300W "Generic"
Case: "Generic" ATX Midtower

One thing to add, my case has a little fault. It's power and reset switch are altered (power works as reset and reset works as power).

heh. are you sure the power and reset connectors are plugged in right?
swap them around on the motherboard.
(should be a bank of small conenctors for various things)

as for the auto power on, ive seen that happen with some cheap brand psu's... some wierd internal logic or something.

But just make sure all the 'Wake on' items in the bios are disabled.
e.g. wake on lan, nic, mouse, keyboard etc.

I've tried swapping reset/power connectors once, then reset switch failed to work.

I dont see how the switch could work on one and not the other. All they are is just momentary toggle switches.... I think its your power supply, as with my 250 watt POS that really probably only did 100, it did this alot.

i dont know whats happennind with ur system, but i had seen something like that with my friend's system. His is a A7v266-C mobo. he had the "Power-ON-by-Keyboard" option enabled in the BIOS. so when the mains were switched on, the system wud power up, HSF get running and then after 1 or 2 seconds it wud go off. then u cud manually power on thru power button or use the hot key on the keyboard.

I'm worried about one thing- can this problem damage my mobo/hdd (for unnecessary spin-up/spin-down) or decrease their lifespan?

Have you checked the possibility of dust buildup, metal fragments, misc. case screws, etc. shorting any of the headers/jumpers on (or under) your mobo?
