Windows ME
Ok, i'm getting irritated. I'd like to arrange my icons on my desktop so that documents are at the bottom, folders on one side, and apps on the other. I turn auto arrange off, restart and bang, they're back like before, well actually not in the same order, but at least auto arrange is back on messing it all up. Also, before i restart, i have 6 app shortcuts in the toolbar, but afterwards, it goes back to 4 showing. If i repeat the process (turn auto arrange off, move icons, and drag the toolbar to show 6 icons) and restart, once again it returns to previous. I have a feeling that if I had a fresh install of ME it'd fix everything. I plan to install 2000 soon, but until then, is there a simple fix for this.

Have you tried right clicking on the desktop and selecting Show Web Content, then right click again and tick Lock Desktop Icons. Make sure you turn off Auto Arrange first. It worked for me. Good luck.
