Can't delete directories from disk

On Windows XP Pro, SP1, why is it that if I mount a hard disk on a letter (D:, E:, etc.) I can create and delete directories normally, but if I mount it on a directory I can only delete files but not any directories?

not really sure but try closing the directory tree then delete it.
