I am in a potential group of people biddng for a contract to do a little graphical app for a car detailer's web site. The object is to be able to modularize his graphic designs for cars (specializing in fleet vans and trucks) and stick them on some kind of 3d model which can then be rotated or otherwise manipulated on the web page. We were thinking of using 3d models generated in a graphic design program then setting up allowable 'zones' on the vehicle which can be used to paste these graphics as a sort of texture overtop.

My question is, does anyone here have any experience with this kind of web design, or perhaps specifically with texturing and manipulating 3d objects on a web site? Anyone got ideas? Concerns we may have missed? If ya do, slop down right here.

Oh btw, sorry to post something so serious in the Other forum. I panicked and couldn't find a better place for it...

are you asking how to do it? there are a couple different ways. do a qtvr movie. but i do believe you're limited to movement to the Z axis. can check it out <A HREF="http://www.qtvr.com" target="_new">here</A>. you could also do it using java. here is a company thats done some really good stuff: <A HREF="http://www.sumea.com/6_0/engine.html" target="_new">sumea</A>
my favorite is the turtle, mainly cause when they first put that out i couldn't believe the textures and detail.

I was briefly considering using QTVR, but I need to be able to take new graphic designs the guy creates and paste them onto a standard vehicle (like a van, truck, or car). We were planning a Java app where we take the 3d model, place the type of graphic the user chooses (say flames down the side of our generic car), paste it onto the 3d model and then allow it to be rotated in one axis at the very least. That Sumea engine looks completely awesome and exactly what we want to do (providing the objects can be skinned in runtime), except it isn't out yet. I sure hope that it comes out soon and that liscencing will be on the cheap side. Thanks a bunch mbetea.
