Neighbor of mine wants to build newer PC (currently on K6233) for pretty much just e-mail client. Very light surfing.

Whats the consensus cheap but stable (overclocking of no concern) nForce2 board these days?

For that matter, which Athlon would fit that bill as well?

is that more stable than the Epox EP-8RDA+ which is on sale for $85 at Newegg?

probably not, the delta just a nicer board, but if the epox is cheaper, id buy it, sounds like your friend just needs a basic system,

you might also consider a 2100 XP, theyre good chips and maybe @$20 dollars more than the 1700XP
if you could convince your friend to spend a bit more, a 2500 would be nice, but it might be overkill for light office tasks

cool. One more question: Since I'm probably going to buy a 1700+ OEM for $41 from Newegg, whats a cheap HSF that would go with that box (i.e. no overclocking)?

Thanks.

well, you can usually find an AMD cooler for sale seperately, but you might just consider getting a boxed chip w/ cooler and saving yourself the trouble

I hear the Speeze with the 80mm fan for $7(newegg)
or the Speeze Falconrock 80mm for $9
are both quiet and cool well!

Am goin to try one myself on my next 1700+ build...

For cheap and stable AXP, I have to say the Epox 8RDA+ ($85) and the XP1700 ($41) can't be beat (that is, if you want an nForce2 board). Very cheap, though both those parts are extremely good for overclocking.

MSI K7N2 Delta-L has newer nForce2 chipset (nForce2 Ultra 400). This adds official 400 MHz FSB suppot

if the guy is just going to be surfing the internet and such...I totally recommend the Epox 8RGA+ (which has integrated geforce4 mx graphics)....and it also has an agp slot just like the 8RDA+ in case you want to disable the onboard graphics.....the mobo is only 99 bucks and it the exact same mobo with the same capabilities. I have the board and it plays all my games just fine at decently high resolutions.

Appreciate the suggestion. I've got a bunch of old PCI vid cards lying around so I was just going to pop one of them in for him.

I´d get Epox 8RDA+ or 8RGA+... It has MCP-T south bridge and the MSI K7N delta-L doesn´t
