Here is what I would recommend. I linked them to Newegg.
<b>Motherboard:</b> <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=13-127-143&depa=0" target="_new">Abit NF7-S</A> - $123
<b>Memory:</b> 2x256MB DDR333 <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=20-145-056&depa=1" target="_new">Good</A> <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=20-144-103&depa=1" target="_new">Better</A> <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=20-145-430&depa=1" target="_new">Best</A> - $78 - $94 - $138
<b>PSU:</b> <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=17-104-972&depa=0" target="_new">Fortron 350W</A> - $37

These are just general recommendations as you didn'd give much information on what you needed or what you plan on doing. The above equipment should be good for most anything though. The memory is a difficult pick not knowing what your doing so I picked 3. Best comes in a pair but the other two you would need to buy two of (prices are for pairs). If your overclocking you might want might want the DDR400 versions.

It would definately be wise to go with the XP2500 over the 2400. Although it seems like a minor difference according to model number, there is a dramatic difference in the Front Side Bus speed (333MHz vs. 266MHz), which will make a notable performance change, especially when used with DDR333 RAM. With the CPU and RAM both running at the same frequency, there will be no bottlenecks or lags for the data in your system (one part running slower than the other, causing "dead cycles" where the slower component has to catch up). It's about a $15 difference on <A HREF="http://www.pricewatch.com" target="_new">pricewatch</A> right now between the 2400 and 2500, but surely worth it.

yeah you are right amd cpu's are really quite cheap up to about 2800. I was just wondering if there was a difference between thoroughbred and barton.
