I'm upgrading my old P2 400MHz to an AthlonXP. So I need a new motherboard, a processor as well as a DDR333 RAM. I'm going to use back all other components (monitor, DVDROM, SB live, MSI GF2 MX400, 40GB HDD). For the motherboard, I'm looking for the budget mobo with at least 5 slots of PCI. I've been searching around the net and found that the ASUS and MSI seems to be good. I saw that the KT400 and KT400a seems to have some issue with certain memory and wondering how bad is the impact? I'm not familiar with Athlon Xp mobo coz I've been using P4 all these while. Any of you got any suggestion?
I went over to the store yesterday and they sales person recomended me the ASUS A7N8X-X. How is this mobo? Looking at the ASUS website I don't see any issue with the DDR RAM. I haven't get one yet. I still need to consider and do some research first. I was asking for the Epox that you recomend but he said he didn't have any stock at the meantime but the ASUS one yes.
At the same time, I'm looking at Athlon XP2200+ but this chip seems to be a little hot. That means can't do much overclocking like my P4. Anyway, is the stock heat sink fom Athlon XP is adequate without overclocking?
If you're looking for a motherboard, but worried about price, I would say forget the A7N8X. It costs between $115-140, depending on whether you get the deluxe or non-deluxe. The Epox 8RDA+ is a great deal, around $85, and good for overclocking. As for the processor, the 1700, 2400, and 2500 are all pretty good values, and offer nice OC potential. Plus, the 1700 is only about $40 . As far as stock cooling, if you do not overclock, it is fine.
