I'm a serious gamer, and I just bought my new PC. I've been wondering which OS to use?
(I normally install two windows operating systems in two partitions)
I like to use XP because it has had better benchmark results in gaming. Also I like Vista because I wanna use DirectX 10.
Sorrily, the only benchmark tool I have right now is 3DMark 2001 ( ) and so I used it on my XP 32 bit and also Vista 64 bit. The results are somehow shocking!
XP 32 Bit: About 39600
Vista 64 Bit: About 26300
Nothing is wrong about PC settings or drivers in any of the operating systems!
I have read benchmarks which compared Vista and XP, and the difference between them was about 5-10 percent!
Any ideas? Is there a solution for me to have better performance, AND, DirectX 10? If I use Vista 32 bit, does it make any difference with vista x64?
You didnt mention anything about some things that are known to improve performance.
Have you installed SP1? That helps performance quite a bit.
Have you turned off indexing? Also a killer.
What else is running in the background on Vista. Generally there are more things loaded but many can be turned off.
A defrag on Vista after the initial install is more helpful than on XP
Im sure there are a few more that I cant think off offhand but I run XP and Vista 32 and you are correct to question your numbers they do seem fairly far apart.
Also try to get a newer copy of 3d mark as several changes have been made to more accuratly reflect op system changes that have occured in the last 9 years.
Thanks.
SP1 is being installed. I've also tried Vista 32bit SP2 with no luck.
I don't think indexing or background programs are of much importance in a pc with 4 gigs of ram!
I have downloaded 3DMark 06. I will tell you about results.

Indexing and background is important.
I have 4G and it makes a difference.
Especially indexing. If it is indexing it is writing not reading your game to you in a timely fashion.
