I am now building a machine strictly for gaming. I would love to hear what some of you would do with a $500 budget?

Thanks in advance!

here is my recommendations:

1) Epox EP8RDA+ ($84.00 dollars)
2) Amd xp2500+ Barton (333fsb) retail with fan ($100.00)
2) 2 256mb sticks of Kingston Hyperx pc2700 ($94.00) dual ddr
3) 1 Western Digital WD800JB harddrive ($80.00)
4) Chieftech case w/ Enermax 365VE-FMA power supply ($120)
5) 64mb Abit Geforce 4 ti 4200 ($89.00)
6) floppy,52x cdrom ($30.00)

Total = $597.00

I went a little over your budget but I did this because if I were you I would not go cheap on the case or power supply because in all you will need a quality power supply for a gaming system.....no generic 300w power supply is going to do the job!!!.....and a nice case for good airflow is a must. This gaming setup is the best you can buy for the money you have to spend.

That guy's last specs looked alright, but why not get a 1700+ tbred, with some kick ass memory, and overclock the hell out of it. I bet it would outperform the barton anyways, and it'd save you 60 dollars.

Ooo... I like the WD800jb, good deal...
Actually the WD400BB is only $55 (and free shipping) - have used LOTS, never a bad one, and fast, but think i'll be going that 80G 7200 JB too - Nice!

And I like the Vid card!

I scratched and edited the first case - Get a Proven Value case!!!

Ya do HAVE TO KNOW the Case and PS if ya go "Value'!
I just happen to know some good local cases for $22 bucks.
<A HREF="http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=855" target="_new">http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=855</A>
They use a Powerlink 300 PS..
<A HREF="http://www.outletpc.com/c0807.html" target="_new">http://www.outletpc.com/c0807.html</A>
Its a big, easy to cool case. I also know the guys in the place and they said they never have problems with the Powerlink PS and got me to try one. They're good cheapies! My whole family and Inlaws have em - Never problem and still running... That PowerLink PS will do the job, and more!

So I gotta agree, if your gonna use a cheapee case/ps, ya better know someone who has one befor ya buy it! These are good cheap cases and PS, and local to me so I don't evem have to pay shipping!
But there ARE some good cheapies out there!
Its shippin that runs up the case/ps cost - look around locally!

(and I don't think the $597 included shipping, i did!)

And i'm WITHIN BUDGET! Plus a modem too! (and a little left over!)
And ya just have to have one a these 1700+ to appreaciate it!
There unbelievable little buttkickers and a hellofa value. Ya just have to giggle when ya get better numbers out of em than those who pay twice as much and more!

Heya mike;

I gotta tell ya i had a hard time getting myself to respond to this post, i just hate building or watching people build substandard computers, especially when they are going to use it for gaming, which is one of the most demanding tasks you can ask your computer to perform.

With this in mind you need to save up a bit more money and buy something you will really be happy with, i suggest a budget of $800.00 US, i know its more then you wanted to spend but it will be worth the extra 300 when you see the performance you get out of it.

You cant build a solid foundation on sand,(well except in this case of course heheh), anyway so we want to start out with a solid foundation, so lets talk about motherboard.

Asus is the best there is, with that in mind spend $200 and get a *Deluxe model of a p4g8x(i7205), or a P4p800(i875) motherboard, these bad boys are awesome.

As far as CPU goes buy a CPU with the fastest Front Side Bus you can afford, i would suggest the, 2.4Ghz p4~800c variant, you can get one on Http://www.pricewatch.com for $176.00 shipped, both motherboards listed above will run this CPU, and support Extreme Overclocking.

Next lets talk about DDR, you will want to get yourself some High Quality modules that will time at 2-3-3-6, I would suggest you visit this website for memory Http://www.buyaib.com ,I have some modules from them and they will actually run stable at 2-2-2-6 , while at the same time OCing the external CPU frequency by 15x4Mhz, they have an excellent product, choose Option-C so you get the Cas-2.0 modules.
This will run you $200 for 2x512MB of Micron or samsung pc3200.

As far as video card goes i would suggest the Asus v9280S, this thing is a Monster in performance and value.
It will run you $175 on pricewatch.

I hope this helps.

The following is a joke, don't take them seriously:
If you want a "Gaming Machine" under $500, get XBox+PS2+GC, they ARE the gaming machine.

It is morally wrong to allow suckers to keep their money

I wouldn't follow Xeen (no offense), but everyone knows that for price/performance AMD is THE WAY to go, no questions asked.

Try
AMD XP1700 JIUHB (guarenteed 2+ GHz OC) ~$40
Epox 8Rda+ ~$85
2x 512 MB Kingston PC 3000 HyperX memory ~$100

800JB from WD (80GB 8MB cache) *buy them from COMPUSA or BESTBUY as they are cheaper and offer you a good decent rebate, you can get one for about $70 after rebates, maybe even $60 if you wait for the weekend specials w/ rebates.*
I saw a 40 GB from WD (not 8mb) and it was $30 from Office max!!!

http://www.chieftec.com/products/dragon/dx01w.htm
A case like this or the shorter version is good quality plus good price. I think I saw it on newegg for no more than $60 with a PWR supply.

that's $355 right there. Pick a good HSF, a video card (Radeon 9100 or 9500) and you got yourself a good system capable of 200 FSB. Of course you can upgrade and add optical devices in the future such as a burner.

I have to step in here. If your building a pc for gaming, the only things you need to worry about is the cpu, memory and 3d card. Make do with a crappy case, second hand 10-20gig hard drive/cdrom and get an nforce 2 board with soundstorm.
You need a minimum of a 9500pro graphics card but i recommend a 9700. Cpu wise get a 1700 JIUHB and some 2700 ram and a good cooler and run it at 2-2.2ghz.

I have still got my midi tower case that set be back £30 2 years ago and it does the job fine.

2100xp @ 2300mhz (200x11.5 @ 1.9v)
Epox 8RDA3+ Nforce 2 ultra 400
2x512mb pc3200
ATI 9700 pro
3DMARK 2K1 = 16,000
