This could be a warning sign the drive is about to go out.
Backup your data often to prepare for it.
Hard drives spin all the time unless you have your power management setup to
power it down when idle.

All hd mfgs have a DOS utility to chk the drive,download and run it from
the floppy.3 yrs old is going to be borderline anyway,purchase new,then
set old as storage and as a page file.
