Bob,

Page 77 of my VX4500 manual deals with Music and Message Objects.

Page 74 talks about how to change the text entry method, but I see no
mention anywhere how to change the *default* text entry method. It may be
there, but like an explanation of the driving mode, the manual is sadly
lacking in detail.

Perhaps another page?

I couldn't get silent mode to work, either.

Bob,

The only way I know to activate silent mode is via:
open the flip and press the lower volume control key until it cycles to
Silent mode and hit OK.

The side key does not work on my phone to engage Silence/silent mode.
