recently, mar 8, i d/l'd the ms installer v3.1 update from ms

it refuses to install and the update notification icon remains in the
system bar

i have tried to find the offending file, \windows\downloaded program
files, but no luck all of the hidden flags are turned OFF in
explorer

anyone have any feedback on this problem

have tried the directions at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp
and it still fails

thanks much

Try going to run, type:services.msc In msc, scroll down to installer, double
click,set to auto run,from manual,then start the service,close out.822798 is
for installer 2.0 w/o SP2,kinda outdated material.Also,the installer update
for
xp usually needs to be installed thru windows update,or it usually does this
automatically,hence,3.1 might already be installed.Also,with SP2 3.0 is
installed
automatically, and the downloadable version 3.0 isnt compatable with SP2.

Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from Windows Update downloads.
