My CPU is seriously overheats running @ 179 to 200 degrees F and then it shuts off after about 30 seconds. This is my first built system and I'm freaking out over my CPU temp. I'm surprised it hasn't turned to liquid. The CPU fan spins at about 2500rpm but I'm wondering if I installed it right. Should it fit snug over the CPU or with a little slack? Right now I'm using Intel's CPU fan and heatsink. Please advise. Thanks.

Snug. Very snug. It sounds like either you have no thermal paste/pad or the heat sink is installed incorrectly. It's a real good thing you don't have an amd...

why is it a good thing he doesnt have an amd?
they ahve on die thermal protection as well you know.. and it works..

Heya Cookjei;

There is no doubt...you do not have a proper seat between the heatsink and CPU, The Intel factory heatsink has either a plastic or metal strip on the mating surface of the heatsink that is just a dust cover for the thermal pad that is preinstalled on it, you need to remove it so that the thermal pad is bare, infact not removing it voids the warranty if you read the instruction manual that came with the CPU it tells you that.

In any case at this point, you need to remove the heatsink and take a razor blade and completely remove any thermal compound, also clean the Die on the CPU, when cleaning the CPU be very very carefull.

After you have scraped all the old thermal material off of both, then take some thermal grease, i suggest artic silver, and pour about a nickle size worth directly onto the mating surface of the heatsink, then mount it.

DO NOT mate the heatsink dry, if you do you risk burning it up as it wont have proper thermal dissipation, and again you void the warranty.

Properly seated the temperature should read right at 118-F.

I hope i have helped.

Installation instructions <A HREF="http://www.intel.com/support/processors/pentium4/intnotes478.htm" target="_new">link</A>.
Your cpu heatsink could have had a preapplied thermal pad or it could have been supplied with a syringe of thermal grease.
If you have removed your heatsink you need to clean off the old thermal compound with isopropyl alcohol. Clean the heatsink and the cpu with a cotton cloth. If your heatsink had a preapplied thermal pad clean off the black thermal interface. Do not remove the aluminum tape under the thermal interface.
Use a high quality silver thermal paste. Spread a very thin coat of thermal grease over the heatspreader on the cpu then install the fan heatsink following the instructions in the link provided.
If you really want to you can contact Intel to get a replacement fan heatsink.
Do not use an exsessive amount of thermal grease. All you need to do is evenly coat the cpu heatspreader with a very thin layer. Silver thermal grease is a conductor. If you use too much it can spread out onto your motherboard and cause a short circuit.

Thanks for the advise guys. It turns out that I had not secured the heatsink and the CPU fan properly on the CPU. My tempuratures are down to 103 degrees F and I didn't need the thermal compound b/c it was preapplied.
