Well, you could install an XP3200+, but it would be running much slower than it's designed to. The fastest proccessor designed to run at 266 FSB was the XP 2400+. Personally, I'd get a 2500 and throttle it back to work with your board, then when you get a newer board, bump it up to 3000/3200+ speeds. Some people here will reccomend this with a 1700+ also, but if you do that make sure you buy a tested chip that's proven capable of those speeds.

Update: I just found a page not listed in the Asus website for some reason, & it seems that there is a BIOS update that'll allow my board to run an AthlonXP 2600+ processor. Woot :).

Thanks anyways man, appreciate it.

Cool. Just looked it up and yup, I was completely wrong. I'm glad you caught it. I'm still going to check for you to see if it will run a (throttled back) faster proccessor, like the 2500 (with 512MB L2 cache!). Not to mention it's about $40 cheaper according to pricewatch.

I just did a thorough search on ASUS & VIA's sites, & couldn't find anything to back up my theory. Anyone with some practical experience know if this can be done?

yah, he should be able to plunk a 2500 in, but it would run like utter shite, instead of a proper 166 x 11, it would be 133 x 11, giving him a neutered processor

the 2600 w/ 266FSB is a much better choice and garunteed to be detected properly
