I never used to have this problem, but now it happens in all the games I play. On counterstrike source and the newest unreal tournament it will run fine for 20 seconds then choppy for 15 then nice and smooth again and then choppy. I tried the newest drivers, newest directx, nHance and OpenGL. This is at 1280 x 1000 with no AA or anything special, turning detail down doesnt help.

my system:

core 2 duo 2.4
2gb ram
1TB 7200
512 geforce 9400 GT
windows 7 currently (Same problem running vista and xp though)

Uninstalling drivers and reinstalling them, Maybe your 9400gt needs to be set to Performance in the Nvidia control panel =], its quite a weak card, I suggest upgradinng to a 4670 - Much better card and won't require upgrading Power supply =]
