I know nothing about IPX networking, I just want to know enough to set up
IPX networking on two WindowsXP computers to play Diablo (the game can be
played between computers on an IPX network). Can anybody help me?
I do not know why, but I can not get Diablo to connect to Battlenet (even
with firewall ports open, which are the same for Diablo2, right?), so I am
hoping I can take advantage of the Diablo menu option to play using an IPX
network somehow.

I'm assumming XP home edition:
right click on "my network places", left click on "properties"
right click on "local area connection". left click on "properties"
left click on "install"
left click on "protocol"
left click on "add"
left click on "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol"
Depending on you install, you "may" need to insert the orginal install disk.
Most mass market computers will have the install on the hard drive, and can
find the drivers without any install disk.
Once the IPX protocol is installed, click OK, and reboot the computer (it
will likely prompt you to do so), and you should be good to go.
Good luck.

Diablo uses TCP/IP to connect to b'net, just like connecting to the
internet. If it doesn't connect, I'd guess that you have a software
firewall blocking it. Tell the firewall to make an exception, and it should
work.

Worked great. Thank you! The only minor snag was that both copies of Diablo
we wanted to play by IPX network LAN needed to be upgraded to 1.09 off the
Blizzard site using the patch download, that only took about 5 minutes to
do. The LAN IPX method of multiplayer Diablo required both games be the
same version. But we have been LAN IPX gaming Diablo now just great!

You're welcome.
I have many fond memories of the many hundreds of hours I spent playing
Diablo. It was the reason I had to upgrade from my 466-66 that I was using
at the time to the mighty Pentium one 133, the fastest Intel processor that
was readily available at the time. LOL

Yeah, i used to play it lots, and have played Diablo II several times
through. But the original Diablo still is much fun to play-- addictive,
especially when done multiplayer, and with IPX network playing in my home
it is fun to do with a friend. Still better than many new RPG games being
sold on the shelves!
Now do not get upset, but we are also doing somewhat of a hack/cheat in that
we up our gold (easy to do in multiplayer of course) so we can buy really
cool stuff-- we played the game clean before, and just want to have fun,
and having lots of gold lets us have fun with funky armor and spells and
such; we would not do it on battlenet where it would be unfair to other
players, but for two dudes on an IPX LAN just having fun it is our game and
a variant on playing it clean so we can try out new stuff we would
otherwise not be able to afford with game gold.
