Check in Control Panel - System - General to see the Service Pack
level for your Windows XP.

Service Pack 2 is cumulative, and includes Service Pack 1 so that is
your starting point if you don't already have it.

Then you need all of the critical updates that have been issued since
Service Pack 2, and there are quite a few of these.

If you do not yet have Service Pack 2 then the best way of installing
it is to order the full Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft, or see if
you can get one from your local computer store. They were distributed
free.

Good luck

You will need to update -
all Windows XP service packs and critical files
go to www.microsoft.com and click on windows updates
Norton Internet Security (or similar)
run LiveUpdate
Anti-Spyware
update the software and spyware signatures
Office
go to www.microsoft.com and click on office updates
any other 'critical' software
this depends on the software

You may have to try to update each of these several time until you get a
message to the effect that there are no further updates. That should about
take care making sure (as far as possible) of plugging any threats. Even
with broadband these updates will take quite a while. It is the installing
rather than the downloading that takes the time.

You can get a SP2 disk for free at a computer store. MS sent them out to the
stores. But call first.
To see your Service Pack status:
Start - Control Panel - System
On the General tab, under the word "System" you will see either SP1, SP1a,
SP2, or nothing listed below the edition.
