Hi Folks,

RTCW was the game that really got me back into PC Gaming and I was thrilled to hear that a sequel was coming out (Wolfenstein). But when I heard that this protection (SecuROM), which I heard was quite intrusive to my everyday computer activities was going to be installed on my machine I was quite disappointed.

Anyways I decided not to get the game because of this.

However, I found out yesterday that the level of SecuROM protection on this game would only be checking that the original DVD is in the drive when the game is being played.

Therefore, I might get this game after all.

But there are a few questions I would like answers to first...

1. Would this level of protection (with SecuROM) being installed, cause me to have headaches with some of my other software (ex: Nero and some other copy programs).

2. When I'm finished with the game, can I easily and fully uninstall SecuROM or will it always be on my machine.

I know that for some games, SecuROM is installed with alot more protection which may be a reason why it's harder to get rid of afterwards.

Thanks for the help.

SecuROM is really one software you DO NOT want on your pc, ever. There are no limits to just how much headache this nasty software can cause you. I had 2 sony DVD drives on my old pc and they both stopped working properly after my pc became infected with SecuROM software (1 dvd drive stopped working altogether, the other drive worked just whenever it felt like it). Both the optical drives became physically damaged in that they still don't work properly even after being attached to a newly built pc. I don't know if just Sony optical drives are affected by this malicious software (since SecuROM is a Sony product) but I now have a samsung DVD drive on my newer pc and I'm not prepared to test out this theory by allowing my new pc to become infected by SecuROM. However on my old pc, SecuROM must have come from somewhere but I am just trying to delay for as long as possible the incursion of this malicious software on my new pc.

If your pc does become infected with SecuROM, I understand there are some highly complex processes you can try to remove it (there are some lengthy instructions about how to do this on the internet, involving much registry hacking amongst other things). However I never met with any success in trying to remove SecuROM from my old pc once it became infected.

You may ask, if SecuROM is a Sony product then why would Sony allow it to cause damage to it's own hardware (and anything else that gets in it's way)? The reason is because in their paranoia there are just no limits big distributors like Sony will not go to to protect their software from being distributed illegally.

In my experience, I've had no problems when SecuROM was running on my system. If you're having problems with Nero, you might to try another copy program like Totally Free Burner or ImgBurn.

After installing you don't need the dvd for SP. SecureRom has never caused me problems. I'd look elsewhere. You can uninstall and reinstall NERO if it gives you problems. If you're a FPS gamer and you don't get Wolfenstein you'll be missing a good game........ even if it has several points where it seems impossible.

I'm assuming you have Wolfenstein? If in SP mode, which is really the only mode I play in...not really into the multi-player stuff, if you don't need the DVD, then what kind of check is SecuROM doing?

My biggest concern is being able to uninstall SecuROM after I'm done with the game.

Thanks.

I don't know about uninstalling it. I never tried. But if it won't install from the registry you might try renaming it and then trying.... ???
I don't know what Secure rom is doing. Maybe it works in MP mode where you need to type in the CD key to play the game on line.. ?? because you don't need to type it in for SP.....

Thanks to all for your replies. I played the demo of Wolfenstein and was not really impressed. I will wait for the game to hit the bargain bins before picking it up. But I'm definitely not going to pay full price for it.
