there will be a multi-player version of the game to follow. it will be free to play but you will need to buy stuff in the game with real money to progress. I'd be interested in knowing if you could actually make real money playing by this game model, by obtaining stuff that other players want and then selling the stuff to the other players for real money. Anyway the online version of the game is probably a good year or 2 away.
I know there will be an eventual mmo of the game. The question I have is will this game be available as a hardcopy in retail stores at any point? I'm speaking only of it in it's current single-player form. Or will it only be available as download through steam/other?
Yeah, that's what I came up with after searching the best I could. My gaming rig does not stay hooked to the internet and rarely gets hooked up to it at all. This is exactly the time of game I like to waste my time on, but having never used a downloaded game I may have to pass/wait.
perhaps you could download the game to another computer with internet connection and then transfer the game to your gaming machine. I have never used steam though so I don't know if that is viable.
UPDATE: just came across this information on a thread on another website. It says there will be a boxed version of the game sometime in the new year. Quote:
' I have been following the development of this for a while and I would like to correct a few misconceptions.

No MP at all. Torchlight is a single player game. The MP version will be a MMO due for release in 18 months (although I would take that figure with a pinch of salt this far out). The devs have said that they will move to the MMO immediately after release and not develop Torchlight any further.

Its not a level editor as such, they are releasing the full tools used to develop the game in the first place, so you can change or add classes, skills, spells and items, completely change the look or how the game plays, just about anything you can think of.
Runic aren't going to host mods themselves (for legal reasons) but there are 2 fan sites (that I know of) being set up for mod hosting here and here.
Also the developers are posting regularly on the official forums with information and tips.

The UK price I heard was £12.99, but the game is only digital download initially, although there will be a boxed version in the new year. It will be available from the Runic website so you should pay $20 plus bank fees. It will also be available from Perfect World, Steam, direct to drive and others.
The best bit is you can download the demo which is the full game, play it and if you like it then pay for an unlock key to get the full game (no further downloading needed).
BTW, checkout the latest promo on youtube (if you are at work be careful). The girl in the white top is actually a staff member at Runic (posts on the forums as 'Wonder') '
Wow! Thanks for the find. Hopefully this person knows what they are talking about it comes to fruition! I'm so happy for me! I don't really mind waiting either, since DA releases tomorrow. All this rpg goodness and ONLY 24 hours in day!
