What do you people do when you need to transfer files from an old computer to a new computer? I've tried temporarily installing the hard drive from my old computer in my new computer but that does not work. The hard drive in my new computer is an SATA drive and the hard drive from my old computer is a normal IDE drive. There's no way to run them both at the same time. I've tried everything and it just doesn't work. So that's out as an option. Another option would be using the Windows XP "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" with a null modem serial cable connected to both of my computers. I've heard that some people use a Direct Cable Connection with a parallel cable, but I have no idea how that works. So what do you people feel is the best way to transfer files to a new hard drive, excluding temporarily installing the old drive in the new computer?

If you can't figure out how to get the drive on the other machine;i.e. you've given up on that route then:

A crossover cable (not very expensive if they are relatively short) is just about the cheapest way to set up a small home network.

The setup of a network neighbourhood in Windows is pretty easy too!

Next thing to consider, do you have lan ports on the motherboards or can u borrow lan cards if you don't need/want a small permanent networking capability? (It is pretty simple to set up IPX games too  )

The loving are the daring!

Crossoevr cable is the best option u can go for. It's cheap and fast and using parallel cable just makes it tough slow.

try http://www.helmig.com/ for any help with using crossover cable

Are you telling me that your new motherboard has no ATA100/133 ports? How are you hooking up your CD ROMs? You realize that these ports will support a Hard Drive also, don't you? Unplug one of your Optical drives if you have to and plug in the HDD.
