Asus P4C800 is the most unstable motherboard

I bought Asus P4C800 recently and put my system on. My spec is like these:
1.ASus P4C800 deluxe
2.Pentium 4c 2,4Ghz FSB800 HT enabled
3.4 piece of DDR 3200 512Mb each on Hynix chip
5.Pixelview Ge force 4MX440 64Mb
6.Pinnacle studio 8 encoder
7.Audigy Platinum Sound card
8.Power supply Enermax 460Watt
9.1 DVD ROM & 1 CDRW drive
10.1 harddisk + 1 Raid 2 harddisks

My system always running like a snail and could be the dumbed system. Unlike being advertised as on the ASUS site with very interesting features, it is a very big contrast. And impolite saying, it is like a cheat.
The system always hang and stucked before getting on internet.Could anyone know about this issue of the ASUS canterwood mobos? Maybe some advertisers just sell lousy products without care, like this P4C800.

  1. I would guess that it's NOT the asus board, I would place the blame on your ram at initial look. Try bumping your ram timings up to 3-3-3-7-T1 and see how it flies... really you should be using two sticks instead of four if you are going for the best performance and stability... and hynix isn't exactly what I'd call high end ram especially when compared to the quality of the other components in the system. Try Geil, Mushkin!, Kingston, or Corsair if you dont have any luck with that ram, but make sure you get something with base timings above 2-3-2-6-T1 or you may have problems because of the canterwood chipset.

Edit: And what is with that crap ass video card in a decent box?<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Shadus on 07/16/03 11:23 AM.</EM></FONT></P>
  2. That VC really does stand out, doesn't it?

  3. According to the Asus site, the mobo supports for 4 Dimms of 512 Mb of those Hynix Ram code HY5DU56822BT-D43 that is same as mine.I do the Ram timing as just on SPD or auto, no aggressive timings. All are just on standard mode and it is still slower than any PIII system.

I would say its your ram also, i would check to see what timings are being set by SPD, you need to be running at 2.5-3-3-6 to get decent performance out of that core.
Also just so you know Asus is the leader in performance, so apparently you didnt set something correctly, or that ram is ultra cheap and does run worth a damn.
It can also be other things, did you load the chipset drivers, or are you running off of the default windows drivers that install with the operating system?
You need to trouble shoot the problem instead of blaming the manufacture, its likely your fault, with poor memory choice, or lack of setting the core up properly, or with the chipset drivers, or BIOS settings/version your running.

Thanx for your concern about the RAM. But did you ever know of classic saying that the RAM does not depend on price, but on the chip itself. Like the good CL2 Ram also in ASUS site only can be supported max of 2 DIMMs.

Those are the supported RAM modules. And for SPD timing is on Serial Present Detect which is just on standard mode that is very decent timing on CL2,5 only.
And for chipset drivers, I use the most update BIOS of Rev 1008.And the system is still like a snail.
I am also an admirer of ASUS, but this P4C800 is not a mature mobo perhaps.
  7. heya siasumarno;

I would suggest downloading this utility from Intel and installing it, your poor performance is most likely a lack of proper Chipset drivers, no current build of ME, 2000, or XP, natively support that chipset and require drivers, i have provided a link below.

  8. Thanx for the info my friend, I appreciate that. But I have installed those that is necessary for the intel i875P driver. I guess the intel chipset is no prob, but it might be related to the ASUS product. I hope there is a solution from Asus about this, cause I realized my friend have the same bugs with mine using this P4c800. Before it could surf on internet the system restart by itself, strange symptoms?
I m looking forward about this for my enthusiasm too.
  9. heya siasumarno;

Are you SUUUUUURE you have all the proper drivers installed for all the onboard hardware?

Your problem still sounds like drivers to me, because Asus likes to use 3rd party manufactures for their onboard features instead of the ICH-5 chip, there is like 124211234 drivers you gotta install, make sure you have all the latest drivers off of their website. All the drivers must be manually installed per device, via update driver in the properties tab of each device.

    XeeN
  10. Yes my friend. I m more than 100% committed for sure.I have installed all the drivers on my system and of course installed them one by one, not mixed.I ve already updated all the drivers on Asus site and of course from the intel site too. But, in the intel site, we could only install the inf 5001012 driver, since all the others are not the intel chipset. And of course the updated Win Xp home SP1 as well and the other critical updates. But I m wondering of this issue from the anandtech site.http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1831&p=8
I hope a better solution probably for this 3 COM thing? So I am really sure that this probably not on intel chip, but the other one/asus mismatch manufacture.
  11. Ok I agree with the users stating that you need to do more trouble shooting. Do you have any benchmarks to note where your bottlenecks are (Tom did review this board) I built a system using this board and it is very fast, with benchmarks inline with Tom's
    My System
    Asus P4C800 MB
    Intel 3ghz 800fsb
two Kingston hyperX 512mg dimms in dual channel mode
4 Seagate 160's 2 as SATA, 2 as SATA Raid
    ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256meg
    Pioneer A03 DVD burner
    Liteon 52x32x52 cdrw
Antec case with an Antec truepower 550 watts
    Soundblaster live 5.1

My system kicks ass and benchmarks right were you'd expect. SOOOO try benchmarking and postem here so we can evaluate otherwise everyone is shooting in the dark.
  12. How do you access internet? dial-up modem (which brand) on-board lan connector, usb modem, ...? tell us.

Does it crash doing anyting else or only when you connect to the internet.

I would suggess to remove your sound card and try again. or maybe move it to another slot.

-Always put the blame on you first, then on the hardware !!!
  13. Thanx for more info from friends in this thread.Firstly, I should doublecheck of course from my point of how it would be settled to my system. And till now, I still stay in the dark because my system sometimes hang too before it start to work.
Secondly, I always go online by broadband USB modem, and always restart before changing url site.
Ok, lastly maybe I have to do more confining and ellaborating something on my ststem.
Maybe my friend Gorham could tell how do u get online with what type of modem? And is there any barrier on networking?Yhanx for the info
