hp 7260 Installation

I have a bit of a problem with my HP 7260. I just installed windows 2000
and have put in all update and had my PC running fasrt. Then it was time
for the printer to be installed. Everything ran well up untill I was asked
to hookup my USB from the PC to the printer. I did as the instruction
asked. The PC recognised new hardware and update the files that were
required. untill almost the end of the installation I get a message that the
USB port does not see the printer. With a big red X showing on screen where
the USB line should be in the picture.
Why?
