Hello. I have VX4500 and this phone can be set to "Driving mode", although,
the incoming announcement in driving mode comes through the speakerphone and
you are expected to respond "YES" using the phone mic, even though you are
using a headset. Anyway, when you are finished with your call, you have to
flip open the folder and (with the phone holstered in your belt) you have to
press the End key. I sometimes press the wrong button because I don't want
to keep my eyes on the road while driving.
The manual on pages 22 and 23 says that to end a call (both incoming and
outgoing) you may press the End key or the side key TWICE. The side key
(twice) doesn't work.
I contacted LG on this and Cust Svc rep replied that it can only be used to
hang up an incoming call! My VX4500 with firmware version T45VZV01 does not
hang up incoming or outgoing call by pressing the side key twice.
I resplied to the Cust Svc rep and even attached pages 22 and 23 of the
manual (from the available pdf file) and told him that it clearly states on
the manual that the phone can be hang up using the side key, either incoming
or outgoing.
I'm anxiously waiting for his response. BUT he may respond in a week. My
first email to LG was replied after a week.

I just recently moved to the VX4500/V02 f/w and find that my phone
disconnects when the other party hangs up. I am in-between headsets
right now, but think that worked the same way with the headset too.
Perhaps you can get this functionality by updating your firmware. ??
I just tried on my phone and it disconnected regardless whether I was
the caller or the callee. (with auto answer set off, driving mode on).
Set auto-answer to 1 or 3 rings and you don't even need the headset to
use the speaker phone with the flip closed. Again, my 4500 disconnects
when the calling party hangs up.

With the flip closed, the mic is covered up. It may work fine on your
end, but the people you call won't be able to hear you very well, if
they can hear you at all.

My experience is just the opposite. In fact, I just tried it myself to
verify each end of the conversation.
I set the VX4500 up for auto-answer/driving mode and had the kids call
me from an upstairs phone. I could hear them just fine over the closed
phone.
I then sent them downstairs to my office/VX4500 while I went upstairs
and called. I could hear them perfectly well over the closed phone.
Perhaps it helps that I have the leather case and that provides more
space for the mic to pick up my voice.

The fact of this matter is, the user guide that comes with the phone does
not explain the "Driving mode" feature thoroughly. This feature is very
helpful in States where using a cell phone without a handsfree device is
illegal. This is all that is on Driving mode in the VX4500 User guide:
START of quote:
Driving Mode (Menu 7 -> 5)
Allows you to switch the hands-free calling on and off during driving
without the need for a Car Kit.
1. Press Left Soft Key for Menu.
2. Press 7 for Voice.
3. Press 5 for Driving Mode.
4. Select Activate/Deactivate and press OK.
Note: Immediate setting into Driving Mode when (the lower side key) is
pressed for three seconds after closing the folder.
END of quote.

Snip quote plus some more.
I couldn't agree more. The UM stinks. I've learned a lot browsing the
Howard forums. It's where I learned how to use the speakerphone with the
flip closed in driving mode without a headset.
Now I'm in the search for a decent headset with an answer/end button. I
think the Plantronics MX153-M1 (for Motorola) will work... but I haven't
tried it yet. The MX150 does not offer the answer/end button.

I never spotted that in the manual about ending a call with with the side
key but I just reviewed it and it clearly descibes what you said.. Many
phones will send a new call directly to voice mail if you tap the side
button twice. But I get the same result as you, the side button does
nothing while a call is in progress.

On page 160 of the User Guide, under accessories from LG, there is a
Headset. "... allowing hands-free operation. It includes earpiece,
microphone, and integrated call answer / termination button.". There is no
disclaimer or fine print. I wonder if this is what we should use for
handsfree driving with our VX4500!

User manuals are now outsourced. These manual were probably printed in a
third world country while the VX4500 was still in the design stage. And the
design was to make the side key (the one with the up and down button, not
the lower voice command key) double as a hangup key in driving mode by
pressing it twice. They probably decided to not include that function in
the final production because the firware programmer forgot to code the
routine that polls on the side key. Oh well it would have been nice if this
functionality was not overlooked. This is a very welcome feature in States
which now makes using cell phones, without handsfree device, illegal.

That would be New York and New Jersey, the only two states to ban talking
on a handheld phone while driving. And neither state prohibits _dialing_
a phone or other button-pushing while driving, so you don't need "driving
mode" to avoid breaking the law. The VX4500's speakerphone is all that
you need to comply with the law.

You can hold the phone and push buttons while driving. You can talk (and
listen) on the phone while driving. You just can't hold it for the
purpose of talking or listening while driving.
All that is necessary is a headset or speakerphone.
Voice dialing, driving mode, etc., is _not_ required.
