Hi,

I have a PlayStation 3 (120GB slim line) from Australia,

Will this console play games from America?

Thanks

Only if it's modified probably, which is illegal as you do not 'own' your PS3 it still belongs to Sony, you are merely nurturing it through it's early years.

I was under the impression PS3 games were not region coded. Best people to check are with SCEE

I thought they were not region coded either, but hey.

But on the point of the console belonging to Sony... does that not mean they should fix them when they break no matter how old it is? Like wise with my now out of date Xbox360?

It is an assumption on my part that they are region coded, I don't have one so I cannot say for sure but IIRC there was a chap in Australia that was prosecuted by Sony for modifying 'their' equipment.

Sony doesn't own the hardware. They have the patent on the design and thus altering it can be illegal. But usually only if you are modding other people's systems or selling/distributing mod chips or instructions on how to mod a PS3. I'm not very keen on Australian law but I can't imagine such a scenario where modifying hardware you bought would be illegal. Unlike IP such as games a physical product would require a little more than a check box on a EULA to constitute some sort of leasing or licensing of a console. Like I said I'm not legal expert but I'd have to say if you bought a PS3 you own that piece of hardware, not Sony.

How so?, the original case was awarded to Sony i.e they won, then it was appealed which they lost and the case was about playing game discs that had been bought in a different country. Go and find the original story read and digest then come and apologise, if you are man enough.

From an old post on another forum:-

The various PlayStation(R) consoles and format software titles are only designed to run in their respective regions and countries.

I was talking about the region locked statement: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/ [...] def-catch/

Now if you don't mind, I need you to now beg eternally for forgiveness.

Have a read through some of the posts in other forums, it seems that some consoles are region coded and some are not just as some discs are region coded and others are not and some people claim to to have been told by Sony that the PS consoles ARE region coded.

Right the only way to settle this one is fisty cuffs or pistols at dawn.

I never said the console was region locked but that it was region coded, quite a difference.

PLAYSTATION 3 software is not restricted by region. The majority of games purchased in another country will work on any PLAYSTATION 3 system. However, the decision to make games region specific is made by the publisher of each title and as a result, some games may not work on a PLAYSTATION 3 system purchased in a different country.

Source.

I might just do that,

But anyway kids, the bottom line of this is that yes PS3's will play games from other regions but only if the game developer wants that to happen, so check the games box and the internet to make double sure that the game you want to play will work.
