I'm currently running on a P3 733mhz so I haven't upgraded in a while ...

I am planning to get the ASUS P4P800, P4 2.8C, and 512mb of RAM. I don't intend on overclocking. From reading some posts here and elsewhere, it appears that RAM selection is pretty important.

Keeping cost (around $100) and my not wanting to overclock, what type of RAM would you recommend I use for this setup?

Thanks!

I would only use ram that the asus suggest to use with the board. This isnt like any chipset i have ever seen and its very very picky about the ram it wants.

I would suggest corsair or kingston ram, pc3200 2x256mb modules. Get anything BUT the LL or LLPT modules. So long as the ram timing is 2-3-2-6-T1 or higher you should be fine.

I found P4p800 not to be that picky with ram. As long as you leave it By SPD with loose timmings, its ok. Make sure to flash your bios(to 1009). As for ram if you dont overclock stick with PC3200. I suggest cl2 ram from good manufacturers such as corsair/kingston/geil. Dont forget to buy 2 seperate sticks. 2 CL2 sticks of geil 256meg DDR400 should be a bit over 100$ and give you good performance...

Hey,

Thanks for the responses ... after reading up on this further, it's got me thinking.

Corsair is telling me that their PC3200 memory isn't really for mobo with FSB 800mhz and that I should get their PC3500 or 3700. (The PC3500 is the only Corsair RAM module that ASUS certified for the P4P800).

Originally, I planned to get the 2.8C. With PC3700 memory, would it be a better idea to get a 2.4C and overclock that? The 2.4c is about $100 cheaper than the 2.8c.

Thanks!

i would recomend against pc3700 it runs at terrrible timmings if you set pc3500 memory to those timmings it would run just fine at 3700 speeds....
