Go to www.crucial.com and use their system scanner to find out the number of spare slots and maximum capacity of RAM on your motherboard. From there, the choice is yours really. I am using a 32bit OS and I get 3.7Gb of my total RAM, so 4Gb would be the way to go, especially for future proofing. That said, I am using XP, I game regularly and I have barely seen my free RAM drop below 2Gb, but hey ho :)
Any memory will do, slightly more expensive products may have faster latencies, but even budget RAM will do the trick, providing you aren't going to overclock it.
Hope that's of some use to you.

before you go upgrading your RAM you need to make sure your mobo will run ok with the spare slots (if there are any) filled.

Also to use 4gb of RAM you need Windows XP / Vista 64 otherwise you wont see the full amount.
