Well I'm about to surf over to newegg and order the parts for my first home built system. I've been reading all these boards and all the articles on this and other sites for a while, but I haven't managed to find a good guide that will walk a newbie like me through the actual build process.

I'm sure I could figure most of it out, but I'm sure there are little tricks of the trade that will come back to get me during my first build. Anyone know of a good resource for someone like me? Or are the manuals enough?

That should help

3 386DX-25's...12 volts...glue some ln2 and a wicked amount of overclocking and you get a willamantee minus 36 pins, 33.75 million transistors and a couple hundred mhz...

jeez i wish i had those when i built my first pc...

Another bit of recomendation is...build your cpu outside of the case before you put it in...make sure everything is working...just put in the graphics card and keyboard on the mobo and rest it on a peice of cardboard or a wood table (clean not wet) plug in the powersupply and cpu (w/ heatsink)...and short with a screwdriver the 2 power sw (front pannel connectors) the computer should come on and you know that everything is all good  . It is an extra ounce of prevention...you don't know how many times i have assembled a system...everything in great shape...cables zip tied all tidey...just to find the system won't boot...so that is my trick of the trade...

Read the quick set up guide if you get one with your motherboard (from cover to cover). If not, thoroughly thumb through the manual that comes with the mobo...these have tons of great and useful info. I agree with PIII, put the basics of the system together (CPU, RAM, VC) BEFORE you put everything together in the case, and make sure everything posts OK. Also, MOST IMPORTANTLY, post the system you hope to build out here on THG and let these guys rip it apart. There is lots of knowledge here, and they can save you lots of grief by letting you know that an assumption you thought was correct really isn't. I always post the complete system here for evaluation BEFORE i buy it. These people have save my butt lots of times, even after I have done tons of research, and mostly they just get me better parts for better prices.

ya...i would say read the whole manual...but normally i read through the manual online before i even get the board...a manual can tell you alot about a boards features before you even buy it....
