switching between phones?

Via the NE2 program, I moved from a V60i to a VX4500. (although I enviously
eye that screen on the Samsung a670.. but that's another story).

I was somewhat dismayed to learn that the VX4500 is digital only. If I
carry my V60i with me and find myself in an analog only area, is it just a
simple matter of going to the VZW website and resetting the ESN to the
V60i to quickly enable that phone? (assuming I have internet access). Or is
there more to the process than that?

Yes. However, you won't be able to use the *228 activation if you are
unable to get a VZW digital signal. You should be sure that you keep a
somewhat up to date VZW PRL on the phone to ensure maximum coverage.

If you don't have Internet access and you need to switch phones, you can
call VZW from a land line to switch the ESN over the phone. There may be
a fee for switching over the phone.

That's good to know. Thanks for the additional info.

Will a disabled phone allow a *228 before being activated?

A disabled Verizon phone will most definitely allow a *228 as long as,
as previously mentioned, your phone can find a Verizon digital signal. *228
is part of the activation process. My Kyoceras even say "Activation" when
you dial *228 :)

Agreed. I bought a phone off of eBay about a year ago. Never
activated. Swapped ESNs with the old phone on the VZW website. Dialed
*228 on the phone and pressed 1 to activate the phone. Got the latest
PRL and within 10 minutes, could dial and receive calls on the new
phone.

Does anyone know if it works with non-Verizon phones? My guess is "no".

Of course, thinking about it now, there doesn't seem to be a way it could.

Probably not. However, you could reactivate the old phone, update the
PRL before you leave, and switch back to the new phone. I think there
might be a limit of 3 ESN changes per day, so that's something to watch
out for.

On non-vzw CDMA phone, you have to dial *2280x.... the x stands for
what band the CDMA service you want to program to is using where you're
at. (800/A is *22800, 800/B is *22801, I can only assume 1900 mhz pcs
providers would use *22802, *22803, etc. (there are no pcs-band carriers
near here and I don't like breaking my cellphone on the road :)

Here, for a totally new phone that isn't 'branded' you hit *22801 to
program for vzw here (they're on 800/B here)...

I'm not sure if this is how other CDMA providers program. I've heard
reference to programming sprint phones with *228, but as I said no PCS
providers around here, especially not using CDMA.

If there is no CDMA carrier on that channel, it'll simply drop the call
with much emotion (on my phones its multiple loud beeps, I don't suggest
cramming the phone to your ear until you KNOW the connection has completed)

So does this mean that if someone got a hold of someone's ESN that they
could program their phone and then make calls and text message under that
ESN and suddenly rack up the charges to the "stolen" ESN?

You can't put an ESN into a phone - you're stuck with the one it came with.

It's not possible since the ESN is now "burned into" the phone when it's
manufactured. You can't change it. In the old analog days you could.

Besides, you could be traced backwards from the people you called from the
phone records of the "stolen" ESN. The cops have done this with stolen cell
phones.
