More about : exception

The computer came for free from a University near where i live, hence why i have it, my main system is 2.4Ghz P4, anyway, i cleared off the HDD and did a clean install of windows, downloaded all the neccessary drivers from the internet and it was working fine, then after a couple of weeks the problem started with the BSOD appearing and then windows not shutting down.

Well as TKH said, the system is getting old. Now if your determined to make this system functional again you will have to start running tests and swapping components till the problem is gone. It seems that the internet is not particularly full of information on this problem.

So:

1: Do you have anybody that has an old system they might
lend you to swap components? That may be the easiest
way to determine where the problem lies.

2: to test the memory http://www.memtest86.com/

3: To test/diagnose the disk:
a) Spinrite: http://grc.com/spinrite.htm</A>
it may be more reliable to swap in another disk.

b) Manufacturer of the disk often have utilities
eg.http:// /www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm</A>

4: General battery of tests but more of a benchmark tool:
a)http://www.sisoftware.net/</A>
You could try using the burn in tool, if it's available on the free version, and let it run overnight.

5: Graphics card, maybe a bios:
a)http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/home.cfm</A>

Other things to try:
6) Power supply
7) Motherboard

Maybe someone else will come along and offer suggestions on what else you can try.

Good luck and have fun if you try it!

I haven't seen that since my last VIA chipset board. What chipset does this board have?

Try pulling the NIC and soundcard and see if the problem goes away. If it does, it's probably a PCI issue and could be caused by a resource conflict.

Try setting PNP-OS to NO and see if that helps.

Too bad that the MII-333 was actually a 225MHz CPU that ran at 75MHz x3 and generally performed worse than the Pentium 233MMX.
