Newbie to the group and cell phones

Believe it or not I've never had a cell phone before. Alot of my friends
have the LG6000 model. I've messed around with it and it seems like a good
phone with good features. I definitely want a picture phone because I don't
have the money to spend on a camera. Here's my two-part question. First, is
it better to buy from a local store or directly from the manufacture.
Secondly, is this phone a good phone with good clarity? It is ranked well at
cnet.com Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, forgot to ask if a
contract is a good idea. TIA
