Game edges are cut

hey i bought 2 games from big lots as they were only 6 bucks i got prince of persia and shaun white snowboarding and both of the games edges are cut. Why is that? like i pick my screen resolution 1920 x 1080 but yet it doesnt fit my screen its a bit smaller. Thing of like a wide screen movie on a tv how u have the black bars on top and bottom i have them on all 4 sides. I guess thats why they were 6 bucks. But if u have any idea how to fix it let me kno please and thanks.
