My adsl download connection speed was upgraded this morning to 3Mb/s service. I did a speed test to verify and found out my actual speed was: infinite megabits/second
Now that is really fast!!!! My Hooters load faster than a blink of eye now.

Obviously the speed test site is experiencing problems.
But I am really pleased with my new connection speed. Pages load noticably faster.
Seriously, many pages are loading faster than a blink of eye.
Too bad the forum is still slow on THGC side.

The service is from Bell Canada, Sympatico Ultra High Speed Edition adsl service.
Upto 3Mb/s download
Upto 640kb/s upload
The service is expensive but I am not complaining about it because I use the Internet as my main form of multimedia entertainment.
The cost for this service including modem rental and applicable taxes will be $75.65/month (CDN$) after the two month introductory offer expires. The introductory offer price with modem rental and applicable taxes is $48.90/month (CDN$).

At today's US exchange rate $75.65 (CDN$) = $48.98 (US$)

Other exchanges $75.65 CAD = :
32.83 GBP
51.49 EUR
86.68 AUD
100.71 DEM

WOW, I have ADSL and I can download about 100-140KB/s and upload about 50KB/s. I'm also a fellow Canadién, eh[joke] and my internet costs about $25/month I believe.

My firewall tastes like burning.

LOL! I get up to 3mbps (and sometimes a bit more) from my Rogers Hi-Speed Internet connection for about $40.

I wouldn't laugh about it or at it.
It is very true that Cable TV providers in Canada have less expensive service fees for Hi-Speed Internet connections but there are draw backs to it. Everyone I know who has used Rogers or Cogeco Hi-Speed Internet service has been plagued by minor service issues with the demise of Excite@Home. Many of my friends and co-workers who use Hi-Speed cable service have had e-mail accounts frozen. E-mail messages lost and password/connection problems.
Although the worst thing I always hated about cable TV was the frequency it would go out. I would get so frustrated when I was watching a prime time TV show that I waited a week to see and half way through the cable goes down for technical difficulties.
In the last two years there were two times (that personally affected me) on late Saturday nights that my Bell Internet service was shut down for maintenance. Both times were for hardware upgrades. When I checked to see what the cause was I found out both were scheduled down times. Sympatico has a page that lists the date and time when a service area will be without service for repairs and upgrades.

I like my service and I'm not going to complain about it.
If you like Rogers Hi-Speed and don't mind the unexpected downtimes, I'm not going to laugh at you for using it.

The transfer speed of 3Mb/s is the speed on my phone line from my residence to Bell's CO (central office) in my community. The CO will be served by many fiber optic OC3 lines for voice and data communications. Since the twisted pair cable length between my residence and the CO is less than 4.5km my 3Mb/s speed never changes because my line is not shared. With cable you may get 8 or even 9Mb/s if you were the only person on the network. But unfortunatly that is not the case because with cable your Internet connection is shared with everyone in your neighbourhood. The more people logged on the slower your speed gets. That sucks because you think that you are paying for a fast service but at times it may only be one or two times faster than a 56k modem. Add to the fact if the web site you are visiting is busy it can be even slower than a 56k modem.
In the end cable Hi-Speed is less expensive the ADSL Hi-Speed because cable cannot guarantee that it will always be Hi-Speed. Don't confuse that with how busy the local servers and trunk lines become because that will also slow your speed down. There are times when my connection becomes very slow but that is due to traffic volume on the trunk lines serving thousands of customers. For instance if we were neighbours we would both experience the same slow down because it is an anomaly of the Internet which is something Rogers Cable TV or Bell can't control. Only major infrastructure changes can fix that kind of problem. More servers, more switches, more fiber optic cable, more air conditioning, etc. Hmmm...that's the equipment owned, operated, maintained and upgraded by Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE). Lifesucks because the company is making minimal profits right now and capital expenditures on network up grades is low at this time. That also explains the reason behind the recent service price hikes.
My past 1Mb/s service cost with modem rental and taxes was $43.55/month. This month the same service was raised to $48.90/month but they also offered the Ultra Speed 3Mb/s service at the same time with the introduction of the price hikes. Download and upload caps were also put in place. Thankfully it will be unlikely that I will ever exceed the caps of 10GB down and 10GB up. If I did the cost is $10/GB. Which compared to other providers seems to be a fair price. Last month I had 2.5GB down and 0.5GB up so I am well under the caps.

Wow, that is cheap for such a fast connection compared to the prices in Holland.

Don't worry now, Rogers + Bell will not go poor. Since they are a virtual duopoly there are few alternative ISPs here in Southern Ontario :( Sympatico's "ultra package" is capped at 10 up /10 down gigs and $7.95 per gig thereafter. Rogers is not there yet, since I got my DOCSIS modem, I had excellent pings, constant 2500/370 speeds. However, they are already in the process of capping the speeds to 1500/192. They have already increased the price to $45 (50+ with taxes). That's still ok for me, but as soon as they incorporate bit caps like Bell did it's gonna be sad, to say the least. There will be no Canadian services to praise ;)

Bit capps suck. Really, really bad.

Cable is still the way to go in my area. Dsl is making an appearance, but it's still not quite more attractive. As more people shift to cable, it will make dsl look much more favorable in the city. But, I'm on the outskirts of the city, so it's not bogged down until it hits the main truk into the backbone, which is fibo. for about 200 miles. Probably an OC-48, but I know not.

Reply to ejsmith2

I think we need to get THGC an OC-192 backbone!!!

Short for Optical Carrier, used to specify the speed of fiber optic networks conforming to the SONET standard. The table shows the speeds for common OC levels.

OC = Speed
OC-1 = 51.85 Mbps
OC-3 = 155.52 Mbps
OC-12 = 622.08 Mbps
OC-24 = 1.244 Gbps
OC-48 = 2.488 Gbps
OC-192 = 9.952 Gbps
