That's screwed up, no one should subject themselves to truly 24/7 wow
May 3, 2010 3:59:32 PM

I am not a big fan of server side computing like this, or OnLive. I just can't trust that latency issues will be properly sorted in the near future.

...They are only demonstrating WoW because of the huge following. If you read the article it tells you that they are not trying just WoW, they are going to try every genre of game.
May 3, 2010 4:08:59 PM

seems nice as an academic experiment... not very useful IMO

at least, I don't think I'd be able to play like that

How exactly would one control wow using an ipad?

There is a reason WOW is a keyboard and mouse game, and one which hardcore players utilize most of the keys on a keyboard and mouse.
May 3, 2010 4:16:40 PM

since you got that ipad in the can with you... wipe your ass with it!

oh wait, is there already an app for that?!
May 3, 2010 4:18:35 PM

This would be an acceptable way to work the auction house, or simple quests. I don't think anyone will try to use it for real combat.
May 3, 2010 4:20:07 PM

No way, the iPad couldn't possibly push WoW at playable framerates, if it can push it at all, not unless a specific version is developed as a native app for it, and I'm not sure about that either.

And before someone says so, showing a single lvl 1 char standing on an empty road to Goldshire is Not playing WoW, any serious hardware running the game needs to push at least 25 fps on a current 25-man raid all the time, otherwise you can't call it *playable*.
May 3, 2010 4:20:21 PM

How are you going to play an MMO with so many buttons required in that game? Gonna spend more time panning the damn camera than raiding.
May 3, 2010 4:21:31 PM

Akhem, where's the gameplay video ?

What ?

There isn't any ?

And I almost thought that it was NOT fake, 'cause the ipad could run a port of this game actually.
May 3, 2010 4:22:11 PM

even though right now there is the latency issue, it is awesome to be able to take the amazing power of my desktop and put it on something portable i can take all over my house like the tablet.
May 3, 2010 4:37:31 PM

I bet the interface latency is absolutely horrible. The time it would take to compress the video stream, send it, recieve it, and decode it, would be bad. And what's the point? WoW takes enough buttons and hotkeys to play as it is. Touchscreen interface with no mouse and keyboard would be awkward as hell.

What part of "streaming" don't you understand?

True, but the hardcore addicts who do play 24/7 already now have the option of at least being part of the real world and might actually be able to maintain a job...

Bluetooth keyboard would obviously be the way to go here, but it would be unweildy as you'd still have to touch the screen.

An interface would have to be made to handle this, somehow replacing hotkeys and maybe using the accelerometer for movement.
May 3, 2010 4:50:03 PM

..presumably, the employee was subsequently fired for not working. An outcome which served well to support the now ex-employee's gaming habit.

Yes I will cary a keyboard with me when go take a dump and then wipe myself with it..

Its not running WoW, its streaming video of WoW running on their servers.

This would be awesome if you mounted the iPad on a stand and had a keyboard and mouse (i.e. a laptop w/ mouse). To me, this tech could be useful streaming to a laptop. If it can run the latest games at low latency, this could allow even midrange laptops to game.

I don't think you could play it very well with a touch screen and no keyboard. There isn't even an onscreen keyboard shown.
May 3, 2010 5:55:30 PM

I cant see how it would be actually fun playing an MMO on an Ipad. The control scheme sucks.

Forgot to add /sarcasm, stupid internets.

Apple has probably just secured another few million unit sales with this video...

err.. whoops. It appears this is totally un-necessary. Someone already sells a wow "hut" where you can play wow which has a built in toilet. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10226003-1.html

I'm sure all the hardcore players already have one.

enough of streamed stuff on ipad. if you can stream one thing, you can stream anything. Geeeez.
May 3, 2010 8:06:11 PM

Can anybody tell me what the point of this useless display of technological "prowess" was? Who cares if the iPad can stream WoW?

What an utterly stupid news item. Tom's is going downhill with all the Apple news lately.

With a nice bonus latency added for free. And no control whatsoever.

If I need to carry around a keyboard and mouse for an iPad I might as well get a laptop that can actually run the game and not need to stream it :p

What WoW player uses a stove top? It needs a microwave and a fridge, not a stovetop. Along with your computer heating the place up, a stove top would turn the whole thing into an oven.
May 3, 2010 9:33:46 PM

I see that people are still struggling to find a use for their iPad ... and fail!
May 3, 2010 9:37:52 PM

I am not saying this is the best use of WoW or iPad but I think the future for tablets is to add functionality, not necessarily replacing anything and serve as a hub or even a terminal for manny other devices not all being PCs. So even the toaster, its fine! There is a lot to explore so I think this is the right idea.

I agree, cloud computing makes sense for tablets. Gaming (gfx rendering) is probably the most intensive work that a consumer is going to do on a daily basis and users want portable gaming, so this just makes sense. Of course the interface for gaming on a tablet is a different issue.
May 3, 2010 10:34:51 PM

I bet there's a 2 minute lag time between your input and a screen response.

LOL I don't play WoW anymore, but waiting for someone who went AFK is kind of a pain in the butt. Although I'd wonder how affective they could be in a 25 man raid while using an iPad on the pot...

Though it is entirely fun to pick on people about this, that applies way more to a PC gamer sitting next to a big tower and monitor. At least with a platform the size of the iPad 3G, you can sit in a public place near women.
May 4, 2010 1:27:05 AM

Playing wow on this is like driving with out steering, brakes, and with the pedal to the floor during rush hour traffic. Hey mom no hands.... a few seconds later ganked 10v1 and called a noob.
May 4, 2010 3:30:45 AM

except that there's no mouse and keypads.

fail.
May 4, 2010 7:58:17 AM

Wow will never be released for the iPad just like it isn't going to be released for the console... I read an interview a while back that made it very clear about the singular use of the PC... if I can find it I will post.
May 4, 2010 8:05:49 AM

Pretty easy to find interviews about it here is just one that refers to wow being a keyboard based game with large storage requirements and it wouldn't translate well for consoles... IMHO an iPad is closer to a console than it is to a computer.

WTF does that have to do with streaming to an iPad? They're not talking about releasing WoW on the iPad, but streaming it. They're not the same. Blizzard wouldn't have to do anything, nor release anything for this to work. How well it would work is a different story, but when it comes to the topic at hand, what Blizzard said doesn't matter. This is for any game that runs on a computer.

To solve the problem of not being able to play WoW on an iPad, trying taking a shower, remove the weakly build up of grease from your hair, go to your nearest hook-up joint, picking up a woman (you will be able to recognize them, they have breasts like the ones you're developing), and get laid. Then you don't have to worry about how well WoW plays on an iPad.
