I've had this problem ever since I got a soundcard and I hate it. For some reason when I look directly at an NPC, in virtually any game his "sound" is all muffled. But if I look slightly to the left or right of him, I can hear him clearly? It must be an option in Creative I just don't understand it.

What is the model of your sound card and do you have the latest drivers for that card?

Turn off the EAX virtual surround, and any other effects Creative has turned on (I only use the Crystallizer).

X-Fi Fratality Tatanium Pro, and yes I use the latest drivers, but I had this problem with my old soundcard also. When ever I "put my mouse" or look directly at someone who is talking in the game, then they become all muffed, however if I move slightly to the left or right of them I can hear them clear as day. I didn't have EAX virtual surround turned on.

^^ Sounds like crappy center channel processing. Could be speakers though...

It sounds exactly like center channel processing. Virtual surround may be enabled in your X-fi control panel, or perhaps your Speaker Settings through Windows do not match your X-fi and in-game settings? Double, or triple check that all of your audio settings are matching (and correct) to rule that out. Then I would look through all of the audio options in windows, x-fi, and game, to be sure one of them isn't trying to use a virtual surround :)
