How might I go about locking out certain applications from being run/installed on Windows XP? My older brother has the annoying habit of placing a large amount of bloatware and spyware on this computer, like Yahoo Messenger, Gator, Xupiter, etc., etc. He doesn't stop on request and since it's my family's computer, I can't really just cut off his access. Surely there is a restriction I can set in a user account that will block a particular program (all this Yahoo crap in particular, at the moment)?

install Mozilla firefox, and tell your brother to use that instead of IE. this will solve nearly all your problems. (assuming he uses it instead of IE)

I'm not sure it would be possible to restrict access to those programs w/o a domain controller but there is one thing you could do. Make him an account that is just a regular user with no admin/poweruser rights then uninstall the programs that he was using. With just normal user rights you can't install anything so it would be sort of like restricting access to them.
Better yet just have him use the built in guest account. That account is extra locked down so it probably won't even let the spyware, etc. even get on the comp.

I agreed with Folken in this. The only way to block these is setting his account as Limited.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.
