I have built numerous PC for myself and others, I had a wild hair the other day and got to wondering, if I was to build a server system (motherboards, cpu, etc...) If I could use it for a PC instead of a server? Just a thought
any computer can be a server, it just depends on the software. windows has the requirements to make a server in it already, file sharing is a server trait. a server is not a giant computer that costs several thousand dollars, you could install windows 2003 server on an emachine if you really wanted to.
Low end server boards are also marketed as workstation boards. Workstations are simply PCs with a few handy gadgets added.
I use an old desktop as a server already.
