I recently purchased an Asrock K7S8X-E mobo for a second machine.

Let me give you the specs of both machines.

System 1: Nforce2 platform
Asus A7N8X-D rev 1.02
2x512 (dual channel) PC2700 corsair value select @ 200 fsb 6, 2, 2, 2.5
AXP 1700+ tbred b @ 11x200.something resultant MHz 2205
ATI Radeon 8500 288/293
IBM ATA 100 HDD

System 2: SIS 748 platform
Asrock K7S8X-E rev 1.2
256MB PC3200 Twinmos @ 200 fsb 6, 3, 3, 2.5
AXP 1700+ tbred b @ 11x200 resultant MHz 2200
ATI Radeon 8500 288/293
OLD 6GB ATA 33/66 HDD

The results were quite surprising, if you guys think that the tests were not fair (they might not be) I made sure there was as little as possible running in the background while I ran the benchmarks.

Here are my findings, Do these results surprise any of you? They surprise me considering the Asrock is much cheaper. I know it doesn't have serial ata and firewire etc, but I mean in comparison to other non-bells and whistles mobos.

SYSTEM 1
ZD CpuMark'99 ver1.0 209
CPU Math Mark 10.813 seconds

Sandra 2003:
CPU Arithmetic 8205/3342
CPU MultiMedia 11857/12824
Mem Bandwidth 3077/2899

3D Mark 2001se on ATI Radeon 8500 288/293
Result: 9749

SYSTEM 2
ZD CpuMark'99 ver1.0 198
CPU Math Mark 10.82 seconds

Sandra 2003
CPU Arithmetic 8254/3294
CPU MultiMedia 11842/12790
Mem Bandwidth 2762/2591

3D Mark 2001se on ATI Radeon 8500 288/293
Result: 10546

I can understand the memory bandwidth being greater on NForce 2 because of the dual channel, but 3DMark? Wierd. Anyway I would definitely recommend the Asrock as a cheaper alternative to NForce2.

That is weird. I don't even have a guess as to why.

OT: Did someone mention that a revised ASROCK board, one with overclocking options, is due to be out? Or is it another branded SIS 748 board of which I am thinking? I can't remember.

Yeah it's this board they're talking about.

Aha! I'm using different drivers for the radeon, that could be one reason.

To get a good comparison you should swap the hdds. I suspect that there are a few progs running in the background of the asus board. Not that I think the "other asus" board is not great. The numbers you posted here for the asrock board are fairly consistant with reviews I have seen. They are better than some of the nforce 2 boards. It is a very good deal.
