L4d2 graphics problems

I get artifacting like this when playing l4d2. I have tried to disable multi-core rendering just incase it might help but most ppl usually do that for a stuttering problem which i have not had. It can happen at anytime sometimes I play for 30 min and no problem sometimes it happens as soon as I load the game. Any suggestions? BTW happens in both Vista 64 and Win7 64. I have an install of each on 2 different HDs.

Here are my PC specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
ASUS Crosshair III Formula
BFG Tech BFGEGTX275896OCXE GeForce GTX 275 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

  1. BTW just thought I would add - this is the only source engine game I experience these issues with. I can run pretty much any other game without any graphical issues. However, I did see a similar graphical issue from time to time with batman arkham asylum.
  2. Artifacts may be caused by overheating hardware (GPU/CPU). Can you tell us what kind of temperatures you are hitting at idle and under load for both your CPU and GPU?

EDIT - I'm assuming you have the latest graphics drivers, yes?
  3. Yes I have the latest (and previous) graphics drivers, chipset drivers etc. I have a scythe Katana III cooler on my cpu and a NZXT Tempest case 3 120mm intake and 3 120mm exhaust fans. under load my CPU core temp is in low to mid 40s and GPU temp mid 50s.

If it were heat I would assume I would see this issue in more than one game but this is the only game that causes it. I can play every other game without problems. Some examples: Crysis, Batman Arkham Asylum,, HL2 ep1/ep2, TF2, Need for Speed Shift, HAWX, Modern Warfare 2, Red Faction Guerilla etc.

Also it crops up randomly, sometimes it happens as soon as I enter a game in left 4 dead 2, or sometimes I can play for 30-40 minutes with no problems.

Honestly its gotten so annoying trying to play l4d2 I'm about to sell this card and pick up an ATI Radeon 5780 or the like.
