My local network connection under WindowsXP is frequently swiched to
inactive mode. What is the reason?

Go to the network device's Properties in Device Manager (System applet).
Find the Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says, "allow
Windows to turn off this device when not in use". Hopefully that will
take care of the issue.

Inactive? Never seen such an status.
I thougth you could disable it. But not heard of Inactive.
