I want to thank everyone who answered my questions. It solved problems that
have been perplexing since I got my new computer in mid June. And a special
thanks to Galen.
I wanted to add a few tidbits of info that I have learned about my XP
system. You experts probably know what I am about to say, but if the Dell
support people did not, maybe it will help someone.
1. No old software can be added to an XP computer unless it says it is
compatible with XP. I had added several including a webcam. They all had
to be removed. I was never warned about that.
2. I was getting the blue screen with white warnings, very often.
Occasionally my OE would freeze. No Dell experts had a solution.
One happened to mention that Netscape was not supported by Dell or MSN. I
removed Netscape, which I preferred over OE, and I have not had a problem
since. That was a month ago.
3. Lastly, the Dell support icon would not open. I talked to Dell support
and he had me remove the old support and reinstall, it still would not work.
He was supposed to call me back in one week and we were to remove everything
(I also tried system restore),( and it also said there was a file missing)
and go back to the original configuration when the computer was new. He
never called. BUT, I got an update message for a 3.0 support. I had no
idea what I had. But I updated, installed and it has been working ever
since.

Wull
There are some older peripheral devices for which there are no XP drivers,
but that is the 'fault' of the peripheral device manufacturers, as in the
case of your webcam.. device drivers particularly are specific to an OS..
Other types of older software will run, but not all.. it is very much a case
of trying it to see what happens..

If you like Netscape, why not give Thunderbird a try? It certainly works on
XP SP2......

That's what I was going to say (regarding Thunderbird). Regarding Dell
support: I've found that it's more intrusive than helpful--but then again, I
work in a university IT department, so we're the place you go for help. On
our campus, the Dell support tool takes up system resources and sometimes
conflicts with XP's update manager.
