I am trying to upgrade my old computer: Compaq 5686 P3 450 Slot 1 processor. I have been reading the board and the FAQ to figure out what I need to get to do this, but I have stumbled uppon the VRM question.
How do I find out what version I have? If there is no way to tell, would getting a Coppermine core CPU work best other than getting a Tualatin to be on the safe side? I don't want to pay the extra $$ for a Powerleap if I can get the Upgradeware adapter.
there are many diagnostic programs that will tell you, such as cpu z, or sisoft sandra.
You actually have a pretty tricky situation, the only thing i can think of is tricking your motherboard that you are using a 66mhz bus cpu opperating at 1.65 volts. This can be done by covering pins with little peices of tape, if it posts you definitly will support a coppermine/tualatin cpu, but it is definitly not the most "elegant" solution.
So when I find the voltage using any one of those 2 programs, what should I be looking for.
If it is between what range is that I can use Tualatin or a Coppermine?
Tricky question! Coppermines can bear up to around 1.95v over long periods of time. Tualatins can bear up to around 1.70v for long periods of time.
VRM 8.2 only supported 1.8v minimum. That would be out of the question for a Tualatin, but tolerable for a Coppermine. I used to recommend people upgrade such boards with an adjustable Slotket, so they could trick the board into using 1.80v, instead of the stock 1.65-1.75v. This trick actually made the system operable.
If you have access to a Slot 1 Coppermine CPU, you could insert it and see if it boots up. If it does, it has VRM 8.4, with 1.30v minimum, easily working with Tualatins on standard Tualatin adapters.

I ran SiSoft Sandra and it says my chip is:
P6K (Katmai) Pentium III 450-600MHz 2-2.05v.
Core Voltage Rating: 2.050V
Chipset 1
Model : Intel Corporation 82443BX/ZX 440BX/ZX CPU to PCI Bridge (AGP Implemented)
Front Side Bus Speed : 1x 100MHz (100MHz data rate)
I have no way to change the voltage from the BIOS.
Unfortunately I have no access to any chips/slockets.
With this information, what options do I have now?
Thank you for all the answers btw!
You could check Upgradeware's site to see if anyone has tried it on your board sucessfully, and if not, you could try Powerleap's site.
