WOOHOOO!!!!! I've run 2 benches of 3D Mark2K1 SE and 3 of GLexess and nothing wrong yet. I have a Dell:

P4 1.4GHz 256KB L2 cache 423 Socket
256MB RDRAM
40GB Maxtor 7200RPM HDD
SB Live! 5.1
Radeon 8500LE 128MB retail

Well, unfortunately it has 3.6ns BGA RAM instead of the 3.3ns I was hoping for. So far it works fine. I had a RadeonAIW 32MB and got 3200 in 3D Mark and now I get 6300. I think I could do better, but I have a crap Intel OEM board so I can't overclock the CPU and that's the main bottleneck I think. Under GLexess I used to get 1900 XSMARKS and now I get 3700. Still the CPU/FPU tests are the ones that slow me down.

People wanted me to post this if I got the R8500LE 128MB working with my 250W Dell PSU. Hopefully I'll have enough power to overclock it.

Thanks for everyone's help on this matter!

P.S. If there is any program that I can use to change the FSB on a OEM mobo or core voltage please let me know. I'd like to overclock it, but I haven't gotten the chance. Preferably, I wouldn't like messing with jumpers cause I'm not good with that kinda stuff.

P.P.S. I just remembered. I had a dream last night. A very bad nightmare. I was overclocking my R8500LE and I could only get it to go to 510MHz RAM!!! That's as high as it would go without having artifacts. Hope it doesn't come true!

That's great.
I don't know how to overclock an Intel board.
They're built for stability instead of maximum performance.

Go to Kazaa I'll host it under the name VGLinstall for the next 30 min.

I found it but it couldn't connect.
But now I now the name I was able to find it on MajorGeeks.com I will download it next month, because I'm almost on my data-limit for the past 2 months.

That's crazy on that combo.

But benches aren't the endall/beall of existance. Run some games.

Reply to ejsmith2

I played Counter-Strike for about 1 hour and nothing happened. Then I played Empire Earth for about 2 hours. Still nothing. I also did 4 more 3D Mark tests and 2 more GLexess tests.

It's not surprising. People who say you need a 400 W PSU these days are going off the deep end. You can easily run 2 hds, fd, cdrom, cdrw, GF256 DDR (uses WAY more power than the new ones), sound, lan, tbird, ram, 4 case fans, cpu fan, hdd cooler and maybe a few other things on a 300 W supply and be plenty safe.

Try that combo with a Tbird1.4 and Geforce4.

Reply to ejsmith2

it depends of course on the QUALITY of the PSU.
ive seen results where a enermax 250W can spank a generic 300W unit.

HMMM.... Dell quality now there's an oxymoron. Anyways, I think it was zyprd who told me if the +5V line said 25A or more on the PSU, I should be fine. It said 28A so I'm hoping I'll be good to go. I'll try overclocking it after doing some more tests.

BTW does anyone know how to possibly overclock a Intel OEM board without using jumpers?

I'm pretty sure the GF4 uses less power than the GF 256. The original used 16W, the GF2 used 8. The original was a monster for power.

The power increase of a tbird 1.4 over say, a 1 ghz is only a few watts.

hmmm i dunno, they geforce4's certainly require a decent sized heatsink on them!

did i mention: ITS A DELL!??!?!
lol

Reply to lhgpoobaa

Even if it is a bit more, there's no way it justifies a power supply upgrade. Maybe a few watts more, sure, but there's no way the GF4 uses 50 watts.

If my baby don't love me, I know, I know, her sister will.

Reply to silverpig

"50 watts."

To be perfectly honest, I know not.

But if I had to even slightly guess, I'd guess between 25 and 30 watts. That's actual power requirements, not thermal characteristics. For thermal, I'd guess 15 to 20.

I don't doubt that Geforce1 used 16 watts. But I seriously think the G2's use the exact same power, plus 20%.

Ever used a Comp-u-nurse on your G2 gpu?

Reply to ejsmith2

Article

"Power usage is down below 10 watts (around 8 watts) under load. This is significantly less than the GeForce 256. For those who had problems with GeForce 256 boards and power management, the GeForce 2 GTS will give you hardly any problems."

Search google for "geforce power usage" and you'll find a ton of other links.

So we have a GF2 using 8 watts, down from ~16-20 for the previous generation. I find it very hard to believe that the GF4 uses 30 watts.

If my baby don't love me, I know, I know, her sister will.

Reply to silverpig

I've seen all kinds of numbers for the G2-GTS. From 2.8 up to 25.
I've seen the terms "power consumption" and "power dissipation" used interchangably, even though they are *not* interchangable.

That said, I truely have no idea what the actual requirements are for anything but the G1. I have that and the AMD specs saved back to cdrom. The G1 chews up 6amps on the 3.3rail, 3watts on the +5rail.

It's too bad Nvidia and Ati don't release the power requirements for their reference cards. Voodoo used to, but Nvidia cured that.

Not only that, my stupid ISP also includes upload data in the limit, #^%#^%#%^#^#&^$*&^*$&*(^%&#&%&^@^$@#% Kabelfoon.

Does that include like direct transfers through MSN or the email? I could easily get it to your through MSN.

Yes it does... you can also ask PooBaa what he thinks about his ISP in Australia... that one sucks even more.

That´s really fu*ked up...data limit, now what is that?

Here in Sweden there are rumours that my ISP will introduce this system aswell.
This system maybe work for the "common" surfer, but for the rest of us proud DC users, don´t think so.

I will cancel my "contract" with them if they set up such a system, that´s for sure.
Wankers.

Well the data limit is 5GB for two months... this is the first time I come any nearer then 80% since months.

But when I take faster internet it will be 10GB for two months, with 92KB/s download speed that will be easy to brake.

P75 @ 90 Mhz... because I need the speed.

Reply to svol

I think it´s hypocracy of an ISP to have limits of how much people are
allowed to download.

I am currently paying $38/month for my 64kb/s connection and I think that
is too high.
When they first introduced it, it was like $20/month with the same speed and
since then they just raised the price, saying that there has been some
"unexpected" extra costs that forces them to raise the price.

Once again...wankers.

Japanese Telecom

Well an ISP have to pay for their generated data traffic, so they don't want users that download several GBs a day.

And yes $38 is very expensive, you can get 92KByte/s Cable Internet for that price in Holland.

P75 @ 90 Mhz... because I need the speed.

Reply to svol

I still think that would be expensive for 92kb/s.

For $38 I would like to see connection offering 1024kb/s(or more)
I am not a cheapass or something, it´s not that.
The thing is the way they try to hype this whole ADSL thing in Sweden.

"Oh, look at this, it is SO FAST you can´t believe your eyes" and such things
and the fact that they continue to raise the price very rapidly while keeping
the same speed.

I mean...is it really that fast? and is it worth $38 for a pathetic 64kb/s.
In my opinion, no.

I am aware of that the technology maybe not can provide higher speeds and
all that, but in the end I think they take overprices if you consider what you get.

Sorry but I wrote byte, not bit. In kb/s it is 768 kb/s... which is much faster then my current 192 kb/s download speed. And that for €36,90 (incl.) a month with a free cable modem to borrow... not that bad I say.

P75 @ 90 Mhz... because I need the speed.

Reply to svol

Here in Canada we get ADSL for about $40CAD which is about 30 euros I believe. I have no clue what speed the download is but I do know that I've downloaded at over 200KB/s before. Usually I just do 100-120KB/s, also depending on the upload/server speed.

Back to the subject of video cards, I've tried overclocking the R8500LE and I've got it to 280/280 so far. I've not noticed any artifacts or anything, but are they noticeable? I mean if I was watching the game/test, would I notice it right away? I dunno how much further I wanna push it cause I don't want to burn it out in like less than a week... THanks.

Now we´re talking, 768 kb/s is indeed acceptable.

And why do they have to use "bits" anyway?
Just makes thing more complicated...why not use kb/s instead?

Well mostly if you play game and you see strange textures that doesn't belong to be here, or your textures are messed up. Or you see columbs through the screen it means that you OC'ed to high.

Yeah, I can only get it to run at 310/310 core/mem stable. Anything above that in the core, it locks up, anything above that in the memory and I get artifacts. So that's the best I can do I guess! Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah, but keep alerted for artifacts in games... I used to run my GPU/mem on 225/205 MHz, but when I started playing Max Payne I had to drop it to 200/200 otherwise the textures starting to get messed up.
