try this benchmark: play mp3s in winamp or win media player, and then type. type as you normally would, using ICQ or anything like that. do your mp3s SKIP LIKE CRAZY? i've talked to a few people that own the mobo, and they say that the mp3s do. tried different nvidia drivers, and still skipping. used a creative soundblaster live! 5.1, and also tried the onboard sound. skip skip sk-sk-skip. nforce sucks. VIA all the way.
(oh, and if anybody has a fix to this issue, that would be nice to know too.. please share)
I get the same stupid garbage! I thought it was just me!! I have an A7N8X-X. I use a SB Live value. I even tried using the On-board. It skips. I can't believe it. Isn't this the board-of-the-year or something.
http://www.tomshardware.com/column/20030227/ Maybe we should all try using it in an everyday capacity instead of just looking at benchmarks. After all a car can have all the best performance stats you want but if you have flat tires it ain't going to move!
Avoid this board if you're a musicphile. Either that or don't type while you listen to Mp3's.
Hey i just got my A7N8X Dlx board a couple of days back and lucky me i dont have this problem. I am playing mp3 in winamp and tried typing in Yahoo Messenger, MS Word, Notepad and i am typing this too. No problem so far.
My A7N8X dlx from months ago (using the 1002b bios from last jan) doesn't have any problems at all with mp3s and typing. I use onboard sound. I used to have an Audigy2, but it made my system uber unstable, games hated it. But only with that sound card have I ever had sound issues.
*shrug* Dunno, try updating to the latest nforce drivers?
this is very strange. can you guys post your system specs and what OS you're using and what version of the nforce drivers?
including myself, i know (personally) three people that have this issue. we all run windows xp and i believe we run the latest version of the nforce2 drivers. i myself have tried a handful of different nvidia drivers that i could get my hands on. i believe i was using the latest bios, although i can't remember.
A7N8X Dlx, 2500+ barton, Win XP Pro, On-board Sound... about the nForce 2 dirver version i have no idea. Here's what the read me file in the 4-in-1 drivers folder says:
Audio driver 3.14 (WHQL'd)
Audio utilities 3.07
Network driver 2.81 (WHQL'd)
GART driver 2.78 (WHQL'd)
SMBus driver 2.75 (WHQL'd)
Memory controller driver 2.75 (WHQL'd)
IDE driver 2.70 In The Box (WHQL'd)
IDE driver 3.07 Full Driver
Installer 3.11
I have the dlx board (specs b low) and while I don't get skipping mp3's I have noticed some windows on my machine flicker like crazy. I just figured it was one of thos goofy things attributed to this board. Oh btw, I'm using a Logitech wireless mx duo board and mouse (way freakin cool, wires suck) and my drivers are 2.45 all in 1 (I think, haven't checked them in a while). Guess I'm used to this goofy sh*t by now.

this is very strange. can you guys post your system specs and what OS you're using and what version of the nforce drivers?
This is not strange at all. This problem is driver related, I can safely say that 70% people owning nForce2 mobo had some on board sound problem because of mess up driver. These are some possible issues I can think of currently: Previous Creative driver is haunting your system, (if on Asus board) updating audio driver from Asus to nVidia reference driver will mess up the audio, Windows system error (try to look into event viewer and look for any errors), and the ultimate southbridge overheating (remedied by put a heatsink onto it, but it seems unlikely on your system though).
BTW, I'm using A7N8X Deluxe on board sound from February until now and I never have the issue you mentioned. You can go to nForcersHQ and look for some help there, AFAIK there is at least one guy is having this problem and it got solved. (Forget how he solved it, but definitely not getting a Audigy2)
Me fail English? That's Unpossible!

my install was a clean install of windows, and then i installed the mobo drivers, and then the creative drivers. i got skipping both with the native windows driver, and with the creative update..
ANYWAY, regardless of if nforce is good or not, i just switched to an A7V600 and it doesn't give me ANY problems with sound or anything. just a hassle free install of windows with no headache and no tweaking. ON TOP OF THAT, the A7V600 is about $30CAD cheaper than the A7N8X... i mean, why was the A7N8X given a board of the year prize? (rhetorical question, no need to answer.) ^_^
Well sorry about the board you had. I think they're the finest out there. I have a A7V8X I was running before the A7N8X & I'll tell the Nforce was a better board.
Glad your happy now though.
Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!
From experience, sometimes you can't simply update a driver. You simply have to delete the old driver. Don't ask me what hardware was it, cause this day, whenever possible, I get the latest driver first.
(Looking left and right) Oh Crashman where are thou? Someone just ditch nVidia nForce2 and go for VIA KT600! ^_^'
LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
Oh well, if you don't want to overclock at all, VIA is not a bad choice if you think nForce2 gives you nothing but trouble. But Epox, Abit and MSI have cheaper and maybe better nForce2, why don't you give them a change and go VIAdified?

well, my overclocking days were over after the celerons and durons. now i just want things to run STABLY. i dunno though, i've talked to two guys that have this board, one guy has -X, and one guy has Deluxe, and they both have this mp3 skipping problem. it happens with wav files too, played in either WMP or an editing program like cool edit pro.
i've tried serveral updates and different versions of creative drivers, i've tried the onboard sound, i've tried different nforce2 drivers, to no avail. but then i fixed my problem!!! guess how??? i went to the store and bought an A7V600. VIA ALL THE WAY! hah...
here're specs:
A7V600 -- latest via 4in1's
Athlon XP 2800
1 GB DDR333
Built by ATi 9800 Pro 128MB -- latest ATi drivers
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 -- latest creative drivers
LG DVD rom 16X
a couple Maxtor HDs... a 30 and 80GB
there is a known issue with win98se and nforce2 boards. in games dvds mp3 divx etc the sound will skip or run fast etc. microsoft released a hotfix for this which was available from their site. unfortunately they have pulled win98 support. if you are using 98se give me ur email and ill mail it to you
VIA killed my father, if I meet you I'll make you regret it.

Well My deluxe rev 2 just died... in 2008. I let it run that way for years and now i'm sad. I wanna fix it. It was my fav motherboard with such a small issue compared to what ya see these days...
I bet my board is/was as fast as dual core setups. I threw anything at my system and it spit it out. I have a gigabyte with the same processor and it's not as peppy but close. That system is still going but won't come out of standby.... it also is tough to start sometimes.... won't post sometimes... and then it hangs at shutdown also but prob software related...
The thread was last posted to on 10-5-2003 almost six years ago. Crashman and RC Pilot are the only posters left around the Forum from 2003. I doubt their A7N8X's are still running like mine does, perfect. I'd be glad to sell my board and the top of the line AMD 3200 2.2GHz Barton for what I paid for it. Not a penny less.
