Hi ,I am not sure where to post this.. I might be having a serious problem in which none of my games that uses Direct3D would perform well on my computer. Before I explain my problem here are my computer's specs:

AMD Althlon XP 2000+
Geforce3 Ti 500
512 DDR Ram
Nforce Asus Ultra Mainboard
Windows XP Pro

I have all the latest drivers for every single components in my computer. I am up to date with Direct X 8.1

Here's my problem.. Any games using Direct3D at no matter what video settings will run at low frame rate. My frame rate when playing any Direct3D games will just be extremely unstable. I usually use 1024X786 resolution. I get an average of 20 - 40 frames per second or lower on ANY games using Direct3D. And I would usually get a lot of slow downs in the frame rate. I get slow downs when like I am looking at sceneries that has a lot of stuff. I especially get slow downs during a lot of action in the game such as shooting , explosion ect. My frame rate would usually drop to around 5 - 15 fps when there is a lot of shooting in ANY games using Direct3D. While games using Open GL like Quake3 would maintain a high frame rate of about 150 fps at highest settings, even when there's a lot of things and action going on in the game.

I play games like Deus Ex, Giants : Citizens Kabuto, Operation Flashpoint, or Morrowind. Now my question is , is this normal? Is anyone else experiencing this "problem"? Are Direct3D games suppose to be THIS slow , that the games are almost unplayable? If so why is it that most games uses Direct3D?
Please help me out here... Thank you.

Well for starters, Deus Ex, on my comp (AthlonXP 1600 with GF3 Ti200) with WinXP Home ALSO lags. Beleive me this is WinXP's compatibility with Deus Ex, and not the game or card. I tried many things but the game will lag at times.
As for Morrowind, beleive me this is how the game is, and personally even though the GFX are stunning, I just fail to understand how it takes so much work. I look closely at the textures and they actually LACK. When in towns, I still don't get why it lags so much even if you're facing just one house or even a corner with a small pot.
I don't recall Giants being D3D, I thought it was OpenGL?
As for Operation Flashpoint, if it lags, maybe it's WinXP again, otherwise and this may sound weird but perhaps just perhaps the board is using the integrated GF2??? I mean at 1024*768 in Q3 under a Ti500, you are technically supposed to get 200FPS or so, and NOT 150. So again I suggest you look at the motherboard settings first. (did you try flashing?)

PS: You would do yourself a great favor if you would have posted this elsewhere than the relaxation forum! Try the WinXP forum, I am sure some help will come, or the graphics card forum too.

ive had alot of problems in the past with directx 8.1

i suggest you stick with 8.0a
problems like yours too, extreeme slowness in direct3d games.
could also try updating to the latest detonator drivers.

I run Op Flashpoint in WinXP with no problems my specs

AthlonXP 1900+
768Mb PC2100 DDR RAM
Geforce 2 Ultra
WinXP Professional

I run

1024x768 with x2 FSAA

frame rates are good, not measured them, but they're not noticibly hanging....

I've heard bad stories on Morrowind, it also needs a powerful CPU to crunch the AI engine it's running apparantly, i've never even seen the game myself though :)

Yes, however with me it lags with EVERY SINGLE game. That I have tested. I understand that Morrowind might be slower than other games however, many people said that they were getting much higher frames than me , even people with system specs 3X as slow as mine.

Giants is Direct3D I have checked it about 10x to make sure that I was not wrong. No I do not believe it's XP again , because many people with Win XP claims that it makes their games run quite faster. And for Operation flash point , many people told me that the game runs smoothly for them , even though many of them had computer specs than are much slower than mine.

I have checked my BIOs settings and they are all in the correct settings. BTW this is my 2nd mother board , for I have replaced both my motherboard and video card and got no luck in doing so.

How Do I degrade it to Direct X 8.0a? Whenever I reformat the computer it will just automaticly install DirectX 8.1.

I Do have all the latest drivers for every single components on my computer. I forgot to mention , there is also one odd thing about my problem , when I ran it with 3Dmark2001 SE it gave me an ok score of 8300. However when it comes to gaming it just runs like crap.

As you can see Fil , like many others is telling me that they run games such as Operation Flashpoint without a problem , even though he has a video card that's about 4X as slow as mine! Also , his processor is a little slower than mine , and I notice him mentioning that he has 2X FSAA on while I have it on the off option and it still runs like slower than a turtle without legs.

I have tried turning every single settings to the lowest texture/resolution and the game still runs extremely slow , only giving me a small boost in frame rate.

P.S. This is a relexation forums?? I didn't know that , but since it says "other" , and since this forum doesn't have one for technical support , I thought it might have been appropriate to post it here. I'll try to move my topic to some where else if possible.

Basically this part of the forum is where people screw around and go wild. You may not always get the best results by posting here. (lots of useless replies perhaps) Post where ever the problem is , like in the graphics section or the games section....

well there is a program called driectx uninstaller... but its by no means guaranteed to work.

opengl is better and faster than d3d any day. if the game your using supports both. some games are only one or the other; so you have nothing to compare too.

d3d was never better but it got attached to the 3dfx/nvidia wars.

3dfx pushed opengl, nvidia pushed d3d. so in turn there was a smaller war over them two. d3d sucks if you ask me.

Not true. OGL is a bit more accurate and takes more time to render (thus renders slower). What r ur drivers?

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened his ass all over the place

Have you tried using different drivers for the vid card? I don't necessarily mean the newest ones, but you could try the previous release, or perhaps some leaked betas. Also, check your D3D settings to ensure that FSAA isn't on or anything.

I asume that you have set your AGP aperture size to 128MB inside your BIOS.

Go to the Graphics Driver setting and checj the following:
Under the Direct3D tab:
Check if the Texture memory (or however it is called in English) is set to atleast 128MB.
Then go to the More Direct3D tab and check if V-sync is set to off.

This might help fix your performance problems.

I will try to find that DirectX uninstall program.
I have tried many different drivers for my video card but all of them gives me the same results. I know that Direct3D is suppose to be a little slower than OpenGL , but is it suppose to be THIS slow? it's like 20X slower than OpenGL on my computer! The games are almost unplayable at some points. And if OpenGL is faster why don't game developers use it more? I mean the graphics are basicly the same , just different programming is involved.
