Just started trying different flavors of Linux and wondering if anyone knows any reference sites for Linux like different commands and how-to's. To tell you the truth I don't really know what I'm doing in it so I'll need a lot of help (I couldn't even install my network card drivers.)

Thanks.

I seriously recommend you get your hands on a copy of Knoppix to play with. If you must do a harddrive install, I recommend getting your hands on a copy of Suse Linux 9.x.

As for references, I'd recommend starting here...
<A HREF="http://www.tldp.org/" target="_new">http://www.tldp.org/</A>

However, a good distribution will have documentation specific to it that will better help you get up to speed ASAP. You can probably find images of Suse on bittorrent and the latest knoppix iso here...

<A HREF="http://www.knoppix.org/" target="_new">http://www.knoppix.org/</A>

and choose a mirror closest to you. Please do yourself a favor and get a distribution that has been updated within the last year. Those older distributions will give you a bad experience and an inaccurate picture of where Linux is today. Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions, whether I can help or not is a different story...

I already have knoppix and I don't really like running it from the cd, also I already have Fedora Core 2 (x86-64) installed. I was thinking about Suse Linux 9.1 but I don't feel like downloading 3 disk images again. That tldp.org site looks like a good website. Thanks.

If you're going RedHat, be sure to check their doc sites...
<A HREF="http://www.redhat.com/docs/" target="_new">http://www.redhat.com/docs/</A>

They'll have things that cover specific tools in their distribution which can make your life easier.

Give MEPIS a try.

It is Debian based like Knoppix...it installs to the hard disk in about 5 clicks of the mouse...and IMHO it is far superior to knoppix. I've used and installed both distros and found MEPIS to be better.

I've been a poster here at Toms for quite some time...this is the first distro that since that time that I've felt good enough about to do buy a domain and host an enthusiast site. I think this distro has it all.
