I've been coming to THG for several months now, but I'm new to these forums: this looked like the best place to post the following.

I'm a PC gamer looking to build a new box, but my hardware knowledge (despite trying to keep up when I can) doesn't have the depth I'd like. Here's the heart of what I've tentatively decided on; I'm looking for comments, improvement suggestions, potential bottlenecks, compatability issues, anything :)

INTEL PENTIUM 4 - 2.26AGHz (533MHz FSB) PGA-478 CPU w/ FAN
ASUS P4B533-EL (533MHz FSB) i845E 6PCI 3DDR w/ LAN + SOUND
512MB ( PC2700 PC333 ) DDR Memory
Maxtor 80.0GB ATA133 DIAMONDMAX D740X 7200RPM 2MB Cache
LEADTEK WINFAST GEFORCE4 Ti4400 A250-TD 128MB DDR TV OUT

Thanks in advance :)

(Btw, if there's a more appropriate forum for this post, feel free to say so.)

Well You're gonna be wasting a lot of money. Are you going to overclock? If not get an AMD system. If you are going to overclock get a P4 1.8A with a DRAM mobo like a Abit TH7II and overclock to at least 2.4GHz on a 133MHz FSB. That way your memory should be running at PC1066 RDRAM. You could get a Western Digital HDD with 8MB cache. It's a bit faster. The video card is fine.

What's the deal with lampshades, I mean it's a lamp, why would you want a shade?

i think he should stick with the maxtor...i dont have anything against WD (they make rock solid HD's that are unusually fast)...its just that i could never figure out how to configure it so it can work with another drive (ie. set the WD drive as master while another drive is slave)...so if you ever wanna maove something from one drive to another...its going to take a little tinkering...but thats just a minor detail...why cant WD configure their drives like everyone else?

 <b>Who fixed <font color=red>ATI</font color=red>'s leaky faucet??</b>

Truth is you know what you want/need and you know what you like better then any of us. I wouldn't change a thing unless someone came up with a darn good reason. Not all chips will OC so you are taking a chance on a 1.8. WD is my favorite HD company but if you like Maxtor then get a Maxtor. Asus is my favorite MB so you are looking good there IMO. You will need to decide for yourself if 2.26 is worth the extra or if the money would be better spent else where.

Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
