I've got XP Pro and the last couple of times I've logged onto the MS update site, it won't even check for updates until I go run Services and set Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer and Event Log to Automatic!
It won't work with setting them on Manual and starting them. It wants them on and on Automatic!
I prefer not to have updates done automatically. Is there any way around this outside of changing the services settings everytime I want to see if there are updates?
(Good old Microsoft....., up to their usual tricks)
I remember getting all of that when I tried to do windows update after sp2 was released. I was able to get through it and do windows update though. I do remember having to install a couple things before windows update would work but there wasn't anything about not being able to update with out auto updates on.
I have Background Intelligent Transfer on manual and Event Log on Auto and do have to turn Automatic Updates on Auto to be able to update. I don’t know if there’s a work around, but you can Customize the Start Menu so you have a short cut to the Administrative Tools. It doesn’t eliminate the problem, but does make adjusting the Services much quicker.
