first off, hasn't msi heard that people don't want tornadoes in their computer cases anymore? Their NB fan operates at like something near 50db at 7200rpms. ISN'T this a bit rediculous? Anyway, my question is:

If i'm not doing any overclocking and i'm at stock voltages, and my computer almost never gets to max cpu load for anything more than a few seconds, do i even need a NorthBridge fan or would a passive heat sink do the trick?

If so can anyone recommend a good passive nb heat sink that's easy to put on this board? or a much more quiet fan!

Sorry to derail this thread, but I'm actually looking at purchacing this board(the 875 or the 865 i'm not sure yet.) and installing a 3.2P4 on it... Have you had any problems with the board? What RAM did you buy?

is it just a fan or is there also a heatsink? ive never had a mobo with a fan on the nb and ive had some pretty good mobos, probably the reason why. There are some better heatsinks you can put on, i think they are for replacements, not if they never came with one, but i guess there is no difference. i dont know if there are different sizes for nb chips. here is one by zalman: http://www.casecooler.com/zablnoco.html

Well, the NB fan is a bit loud :). The MB itself is freaking awesome, everything you could want and more. I went with 2x256 twin512x corsair pc3200llpt rev 1.1 2-2-2-6 but if you are going to overclock getting something faster than that, say pc3700 or pc3500 from corsair for over 800mhz fsb (200 quad pumped). In all performance tests the 865 did just as well or faster than the 875 because PAT is activated in the 865, also it has dynamic overclocking which is cool. The MB itself went into a system i made for a friend, so i don't use it. We put in a 2.4 p4 ht into it, and from what i've seen if you have an unlocked cpu you can easily get say 3.0ghz speeds out of it. (so save yourself a few hundred, the 2.4 is the slowest model with ht and 800mhz, so it should be able to do alot more than that).

As for random problems, everything has been excellent and MSI makes a great looking and working board. One software issue I had is that the 1000mb network driver keeps uninstalling itself under windows 2000pro. Can't figure out the problem. It works fine, after installation of the drivers, then after you rebute, it has that yellow ! saying its got problems. I can only assume this is a drivers issue and NOTHING to do with the MB, but who knows. The bios is easy to use.

I would definitly recommend the 865!

do i have it backwards? Could of sworn the NB is the one fairly close to the cpu which controls throughput from agp and ram. If i have it backwards, sorry, but the "*" bridge which almost always comes with either a passive heat sink or heatsink with fan that sits close to the cpu socket.......... its fan is too loud, My question was, can i take that fan off and just use the heat sink, or will heat issues arrise? (under low system loads)
