I am having trouble with my Cd-rw. Lately it has started not to recognize
any cd I put into it. It will play movies (dvd) but refuses to see any other
type of media.
I am afraid to try to reformat in case it does recognise that disk also. Any
suggestions as to what is causing this and how to repair it?

I should have stated that I am running Winxp home.
Sorry..

More about this confounded problem. It will not read the system recovery
disk. The light on the disk drive will run for a few seconds then nothing. I
had tried to use explore to find the contents of the disk, nothing.
Going into the command prompt, I attrmpted to read the directory of the
disk. and got the message "disk is not ready"
I really need some advice here.

Best possible guess is that the CDR-RW is shot. However what is throwing me
off is the fact it plays DVD's..? This is strange.
Since it cannot read data disks I will say that a Registry entry is fouled
up. Did you try the http://www.microsoft.com knowledgebase? If you place
that error of the device not functioning into the search box it may come
back with a solution.
Did you try calling HP "No Service" support to see if they could figure it
out from their online database?

I'm not really sure about your drive, but most combo drives I know have
different heads (components in the head) for CD reading/writing and DVD
reading.
I know about DVD players that suddenly aren't able to read DVDs anymore,
but can read CDs. This means the DVD-reading-unit in the head is broken.
Maybe in your drive, the CD-reading-unit is broken.
If you still have warranty, go to your dealer and have the drive replaced.
